Also PPD from pregnancy isn't shared by men.

If you mean ppd as a direct result of pregnancy related hormones and biological events then you are correct. Men can in some instances suffer from PPD though.

male PPD is usually onset by new fatherhood or marital problems. female PPD can be similar and/or it can be hormonal.

My point in that post is woman have a chance to develop a whole slew of medical problems after pregnancy, not just PPD. Most health insurances do not cover spider/Varicose veins removal since its considered a cosmetic procedure. Which i think SUCKS because they look bad!

Men's hormones do change during and after pregnancy, which can be a contributing factor.

No question that women change much more drastically though.

I also wouldn't say that men have it worse than women, but any psychological disorder is at its root a physiological problem as well. The fact that one may be hormone induced may make it worse, it may not. Psychological depression can be just as bad.

But ppd alone doesn't make female birth control a men's issue. I should stop derailing.

Ok lets be specific on hormones, because hormones classify a broad range of chemicals in the human body that perform a variety of functions. Everything from metabolism to aggression.

Specifically PPD is thought to be attributed to elevated Corticotropin-releasing hormone(CRH). Females produce CRH in the placenta and pituitary gland. CRH elevates during labor so that oxytocin and DHEA can be released to initiate uterine and cervical contractions, respectively.

Males do posses CRH, however, male CRH is strictly produced by the pituitary gland. There is nothing during a female labor that would trigger significant increased CRH in males before and after labor. Acute stress would raise it but nothing compared to female labor+acute stress.

Psychological conditions can be treated with cognitive therapy. Psychiatric conditions (conditions involving chemical imbalances) usually require medications and cognitive therapy is what im trying to get at.

I'm not familiar with the metabolic pathway of CRH, so I'm not going to comment on that.

Let me step back and say, hormones may play an ancillary factor to PPD, but they are not the sole cause of PPD. There are an enormous number of factors at play during pregnancy and childbirth. My point in bringing up hormones was not to suggest there is some directly identifiable cause in PPD that men undergo as well (there isn't). Rather much more simply, men do undergo physiological changes during the same time that may (or may not) contribute to PPD in males.

CRH has a horrid pathway, actually anything to do with the brain in my opinion is just a freaking nightmare.... why i went into genetics instead of law school still baffles me lolz

somewhat, I'm more "behind the scenes." I'm currently a doctoral student in bacterial genetics. However, I do have my Master's of Public Health.

I volunteer at AIDS Project monthly, I just answer random questions have about STI's, HIV/AIDS, medications, preventive measures. Since we provide full health care services to no-income/low-income individuals I hear a wide range of questions.

That's interesting! Kudos! I wish I was as philanthropic as I was in my late teens and early twenties.

The funny thing is that the lady who posted it on facebook is staunchly pro-life. xD

Man... you gotta really trust a girl/guy to sleep with her and not use a condom... even if she is on the pill... maybe I just have trust issues or its that fact that I know a girl who had sex with her b/f and didn't tell him she had herpes... They did get married though.

Even if you did use a condom it's possible to contract genital warts. So maybe you should trust the person either way because said person could have no symptoms at all technically. Or you may not notice.

Here we go again, sorry for the bump. :-(

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/10/az-abortion-bills-arizona-gestational-age_n_1415715.html?ref=topbar

This article is about three bills that have been passed through Arizona legislature. One mandates that life begins two weeks before conception, one mandates that children in school should have limited education concerning abortion, and one protects doctors from being sued if they intentionally withhold health information from an expectant mother that could lead to the mother seeking an abortion.

Really, this has gone a bit too far. It's perfectly ok for people to be pro-life, but it is absolutely NOT ok at all for them to force those beliefs onto others. Stating that life begins before conception is just about the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. If scientists can't even pinpoint the time that life begins, how do lawmakers expect to do it? Not educating people about their options in school is just sad. And in my opinion, a doctor withholding health information from any patient for any reason should be a criminal offense.

The woman this video is about is from my state. She's suing over her inability to get an abortion except by way of risky pills from the internet because Idaho law makes it very difficult for women to abort, even though Roe vs. Wade gives women that right. :-( I just don't even know anymore.

oh another interesting thing in regard to the constitution in regards to intellectual property, it's supposed to be protected for a limited amount of time in order to encourage growth.

But today, centuries after the Constitution was written, it has become all about protecting the income of the campaign contributing class (some 0.56% of the population).

Songs over 120 years old are STILL under copyright and earning income for the less than 1%.

Long, but well worth the read. This article has links to several other sources as well. The movements to squash women's rights in favor of fetus' 'personhoods' have gotten quite out of control. :-(

So...Do politicians also think that people schedule sex?

/sigh

Unfertilized sperm and unfertilized egg equal a person? I'm wishy-washy on the topic of abortion. I think it's circumstantially acceptable, but this is ridiculous.

EDIT: Chanti, why do you find it necessary to re-hash an argument on this thread from a month ago when a new article was posted? Just wondering...

"every day people" have the choice to believe in what they want though... It's when you start believing you have no power that you really lose because then everyone just sits back and watches as the world burns around them thinking they're helpless to do anything..

Wait people don't schedule sex?!?!? You tell that to Sheldon's mother!

Edit: I don't get the two weeks before conception thing though... lol...

If this law was to pass, then every woman who has their monthly is breaking the law and every man who has any sperm leave his body is breaking the law. It sounds insane but that is exactly what they are saying.
I think the name of the topic hits the nail on the head. These politicians are sure making me feel like a potential walking incubator, much less human...or a woman.
I am so sick of these nut balls attempting to drag us back to the stone age.

Here, have some more fun stuff.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/soraya-chemaly/the-video-every-woman-has_b_1403714.html?ref=fb&src=sp&comm_ref=false#access_token=AAAAACuIpepUBAI3K24lB2JAgTEkFUlo6PAJ1syIoZAmXcfXNPoZCPBrqhHr2sVJI2d0QCLCmhlXFfc0dX56K0FyWIhZCzMZD&expires_in=0#sb=1295728,b=facebook

So if you can't watch the videos or read the long article, there's now stuff going on that makes a fetus the property of the state during pregnancy. A woman who had twins, one healthy and one stillborn, is being tried for murder of her stillborn child. A woman who did not wish to undergo a C-section and tried to have her baby at home was interrupted during her active labor, strapped down to a gurney, and forced to undergo the procedure. A woman who had lung cancer which gave her pregnancy a good chance of causing her death was forced by the hospital to undergo a C-section, during which both her and her child died. It's *** and I'm pissed, actually.

Oh, and for men and women out there who don't think this will affect them because they are pro-life? Think again. Personhood laws are trying to make birth control illegal.

Isn't there the possibility that the child could have cerebral palsy if the birth was interfered with? What if something had tussled the child's skull around a little more that necessary while the live-birth was taking place? My neighbor has cerebral palsy because of complications during his birth.

I still don't understand how you can be forced to have a C-section. Wouldn't you have to sign off on that? I'm pissed too!

-------------------------------------

I think I've already dropped the story about a friend of mine who married this religious nut, but anyway five daughters in six years, blah-blah-blah...Anyway, they chose to have a at-home birth with a midwife for their first couple of births. The third one, there were complications with the pregnancy that set off alarms with her sister and mother (gestational diabetes). He still didn't let her go see an OB/GYN, and when the midwife recommended actual medical treatment, he decided that when it was time he would deliver the baby himself! Not saying that that was bad, but at what point should people take into account their own boundaries?

Ugh...Every time I think of that dickhole I get mad!

I thought she would need to approve her own C-section too, considering that not only is it her body but it's also a major surgery. But nope, according to the video and article, the hospital called an emergency meeting to determine the rights of the fetus when it was discovered that birthing the child would kill the mother. They decided the rights of the fetus outweighed the rights of the mother, forced her to undergo a C-section, and of course it resulted in the deaths of both the mother and the child. Appalling. Between those two videos, there's 2-3 women who were forced to have C-sections against their will. Not cool, America. Not cool at all.
