Never really bought from amazon so im not sure how they do that actually >.>

Amazon charges you the day its shipped. You usually get free 2-day shipping on pre-orders and will have it in hand the day it's supposed to be released.

Don't forget the production costs before they actually started selling it, those are accounted for in the pricing as well ie labor, adversisments, also printing any booklets that might come with a physical copy.

I can't think of a good example in this context so bare with me as we jump back to food for a sec. When you eat out the prices are not just the cost of the actual food. The price is calculated using the ingrdient cost as a given but also includes labor and other stuff to make sure there is a profit. The same applies to movies music and software where they set their prices based off there sales projections. A lower price may bring more willing customers but at the same time for every person that obtains it with out paying the price needs to be higher to meet their profit goals.

I didn't specifically mention it since I didn't want to blow my post to triple it's size but I did say:

It doesn't cost companies much more to provide 100 copies of a song, movie, program or other such thing than it does to provide 5.

Once the product is made, it costs very little to sell extra copies. Yes production costs for many of these items are incredibly high but that is exactly why they need to benefit from selling millions to make a return. If the price was too high then not as many people buy it. Basically my point is this:

You charge 376 bucks for a office suite but only sell 1 million.
You charge 300 bucks and sell 2 million.
Charge 200 and sell 5 million.

Obviously these numbers are made up and it's hard to say what the best price is or say how many people would buy it at what price but individuals and businesses often do not purchase these items because of their absorbent costs.

I wanted to single this part out since I'm not sure I can agree with it. But it's one of the claims that companies make. Thing is, they don't need to make up for anything. They never had that customer in the first place. The only reason the customer obtained it was because they could steal it. I'm no expert on these things but I know enough basic economics to say that lowering the price can make you more money in many cases. If this wasn't true sales would not be so prevalent. There are too many factors that I don't know to make a good educated opinion but I haven't seen any good evidence yet that they really are doing it the right way.

The thing about consumer boycotts is that it really should be targeted at those groups that support the legislation in question no? Because the goal is to "put the hurt on them where they will feel it."

This only makes sense...those who are for this type of legislation and backing it with money will pull their support when they see the financial impact.

However, that gets tricky because not everyone is aware of exactly who supports HR 3261. Earlier in this thread, Microsoft operating systems were brought up as an example of overpriced software that ends up being pirated, leading to a cycle of escalating prices. So for certain, software developers especially on the scale of MS should be targets for such boycotts no?

But ironically Microsoft is one of the groups opposing HR 3261...

http://www.opencongress.org/contact_congress_letters/new?bill=112-h3261&position=oppose

(Sorry, I am linking to the default "oppose" page so you could see the groups...it was the form I filled out LOL, but there is a "support" page with the same information to be fair...) :p

What I am getting at is that while "Black March" is a noble cause célèbre, it really should be targeted at those (specific) companies supporting the bill. Maybe look over those specific groups (Disney, Nike, RIAA, Netflix, Visa, Viacom, Adidas, Ford Motor Company, the SAG, etc.) before laying out blanket boycotts.

Schutz that is very logical, only answer I could give to boycotting the whole lot would be that the people who are in your camp will be even more pissed at the companies pushing the issue. They might get so mad that they fight even harder for your support?
