Everything seems -ok- to stage any kind of ballista (but, more testing is needed).

Yup, it was back on Fenrir. It was uncapped and I used to spam Wind Blade since it does incredibly high damage and goes through shadows and blink. I usually used Odin for SMN 2HR, but seeing how the opposing team was all bunched up together, I couldn't miss this chance lol

After playing on Undine, we have come to the conclusion that the only obstacle is communication.

Everything works, and rather flawlessly.. even the extra perks that the test server provides are icing on the cake.

With that being said, ballista has inadvertently received its greatest upgrade yet.

Just a reply to a rather ignorant comment on YouTube and I only post it here on FFXIAH because every time I try to comment, I get some dumb error to try again...

10HP and 2MND isn't going to help you if you decide to stand around with your thumb up your *** allowing the opposite team to get GB's off you. You waste abilities. The way you position yourself is terrible. People in Ballista used to have a pretty decent idea of what they were doing. It's 2012 now, and that's apparently not the case anymore.
@wh15p3r Yes, it's 2012. Get updated.
Several deaths will increase the rate of higher tier items you can quarry up. ex. Giant's drink, Megalixir, etc.
Use of abilities will increase the chance of quarrying revitilizers. ex. If you are silenced and you quarry, the chance of obtaining an echo drop is much greater than any other item.
As for positioning, the closer you are to the rook the more likely you will quarry an item over a petra which is why the majority of the match, you will see him standing next to a rook.
If you meant positioning for sweet spot in ranged attacks:
1. The most practical way to get kills is to use WS. Positioning yourself for the sweet spot is irrelevant when your main objective is getting TP, or landing debuff arrows.
2. Running in and positioning yourself for the sweet spot will get you unwanted attention. Notice the players that die the most are the melees, the DRG and DRK in his alliance.
3. The fact that you're moving around so much also means less time shooting which equals to lower TP gain.
4. If you notice, he does in fact run in to sidewinder.

These people have been doing Ballista for years so the tactics and strategies will have obviously evolved from whatever time period you used to play Ballista in.

I used to skip sleeping just to get in OM's, the rush can't be beat, quick thinking quick everything or your done, gets your adrenaline flowing for sure, crazy because its a video game. I played every FPS almost as of late and I just cant find the excitement I had when I did big match PVPs, 1v1 isn't my cup of tea tbh because I love the odds stacked against me at times just to see if I can come out alive, even just for a few seconds lol. Iv'e been actively seeking opponents to play with for several years now but everyone is usually too proud to get K.O'd by another player =/ "lolballista" is usually the prognosis to those players.

I was honestly taking all the criticism to heart, as in something I can improve on... until their credibility went out the window with ..... "People in Ballista used to have a pretty decent idea of what they were doing. It's 2012 now, and that's apparently not the case anymore."

I can see how this would be an inconvenience~
Although it's interesting, most of the people I speak to have no idea what diorama even is...

For those that didn't know, they ninja added a search function for "Abdhjals".

So what are you suggesting with the test server?

Dio, or public matches?

60? uncap?

I'm pretty interested, but don't want to server transfer...

Thanks for the interest~

We've been toying with the idea of scheduling ballista matches with a team emphasis on Undine, similar to the original Ballista Royale.

For now. I'll keep this thread open for ballista on Lakshmi.
Please look forward to a separate thread regarding the proposed matter.

Is PvP in FFXI balanced at all?

It would seem like it wouldn't be, with the devs never focusing on PvP. You never see an update where an ability gets changed because it's broken in PvP, like in other MMOs.

Just asking an honest question because I've never really played very much PvP in FFXI.

Just asking an honest question because I've never really played very much PvP in FFXI.

Dread Spikes is specifically nerfed in PvP, along with direct magic damage spells/weapon skills being capped at 999 damage for a single attack. This was a specific update added after the spell was introduced and as a DRK I'm very familiar with it.

It makes the spell borderline worthless which actually makes sense because versus enemies with 1k-2k hp the ability is quite insane.

I find that abilities like Seigan Third Eye have been adjusted as well limited to fewer attacks when avoiding higher delay weapons as opposed to lower ones.

I'm sure there are other abilities that have been tweaked, I will have to look for them.

Resist traits are greatly enhanced as is the gear that affects them so resisting enfeebles of your choice based on the situation is possible even when elemental seal is used.

Sleep (darkness based) has a limited duration of 45 seconds, that might seem like a lot but we are talking about a full unresisted landing, meaning you have no barsleep, no traits, and no gear. Sublimation is an amazing way to get out of sleep anyway without sacrificing gear for it.

Light/Neutral based sleeps have higher accuracy/longer duration but you build up diminishing returns far more quickly. Sleep bolts, Repose only work a few times.

Light shot however seems to break this rule.

The spell Break, while never building diminishing returns is highly inaccurate. I feel this spell needs to be adjusted but there is a definite trade off.

For martial jobs such as dancer, thief, monk etc. The scholar sub job has introduced a large degree of balance that did not exist before. Allowing these jobs (depending on race with merits) to easily get 400~ mp and access to the spells of drain, aspir, sleep, Erase, dispel, stoneskin, blink, cure3, RegenII and the AoE versions of them. In addition to having their native advantages of sustain, evasion/bloodybolts/bully/, high-hp/DoT - this is a very powerful advantage. Unfortunately many people lack the talent and intelligence to use this myriad of abilities correctly or are too lazy to get the proper equipment - and then cry about how terrible things are.

The recent cure update helped jobs like this even more giving them a more powerful ability to sustain themselves, when the stances of lightarts and darkarts are used tactfully.

Trial of the magians has also given jobs that can dual wield, or even jobs like Monk the ability to create weapons specific for the situation. A dancer or thief wielding +40 magic evasion daggers can still hurt a target quite badly, in addition to taking the enfeebling power from jobs like Dark Knight, Black Mage and Red Mage away from them - due to the higher base damage (as gear has not kept up with our offensive values) and having the new meritable weaponskills.

Thief is honestly one of the most under-rated jobs in the game, with Bully/non directional sneak attack, bloodly bolt spam for over 100 hp a bolt, and access to Mandau/utility dagger offhand with low delay. and the ability to get near the 80% evasion cap via blind bolt/evasion gear, on even a relic user such as myself/ or pick PDT, and having access to last-stand which is entirely agility based and ranged.

Their DoT is quite powerful vs non-paladin jobs and using the scholar sub job they can enter a fight with blink stoneskin, and easily AoE sleep their enemy to wipe shadows, drain them for quick HP and have alacrity/celerity to assist them with darkbased or light based healing.

The gear and dedication to reach this point however, rather than just picking up a Vanilla Blue Mage or Red Mage is quite high, and much harder than being a TH ***.

Lakshmi has an active 60 cap ballista scene, all times of the day.
Carbuncle has an active 60 cap ballista scene, jp time only.
Fenrir I've heard has 99 cap official matches go down, na time only.

No cap is not active on Lakshmi, or Carbuncle.
Although I have heard that it is active on Fenrir(confirmation is needed).

Likewise, the test server Undine is still up for grabs for any kind of balli~

One more time for the lurkers! :D

Currently, two servers hold 60 cap official matches - Lakshmi and Carbuncle (Fenrir server I've heard has 60cap matches occur as well, but need some confirmation!).
The JP population of Lakshmi has been dwindling.. the majority has moved to Carbuncle in an attempt to make one universal ballista server.

As for 99 cap matches: Fenrir is known for this, and I've personally heard that it is still active.. but confirmation is needed!

The linkshell I am part of, BallistaRevolution is situated on Lakshmi.
We currently have about 10-15 active members, mix of na/eu/jp.
Our website can be found here :http://vyiv.wordpress.com/

We are always looking for strong members, and we take ballista very seriously.

Both servers have diorama specialty games called "Hako". Japanese wording for Box.
Essentially, the concept of Hako was introduced with the inception of the BallistaRoyale, and conclusively, is quite similar. In other words, this player made event is very old. The players that do partake are very profficient~

The rules:
- The level cap is 60
- Subjobs are allowed
- Matches are 15 minutes in length - all or nothing(in the case of a 5v5 or 6v6 the time allotted is extended to 20 minutes, with a 3 minute preparatory phase).
- Outside items are NOT allowed
- No duplicate main jobs, all jobs are mirrored, i.e; SAM/WAR DRK/SAM MNK/WAR vs SAM/WAR DRK/SAM MNK/WAR
- The following jobs are allowed to participate: SAM, WAR, DRK, MNK, DRG, RNG, PLD, RDM, WHM (In special cases, BLU DNC SCH are allowed to participate)
- Sub jobs are static for all jobs: SAM/WAR, WAR/SAM, DRK/SAM, DRG/SAM, MNK/WAR, RNG/SAM, PLD/WAR(or /WHM), RDM/BLM(or /WHM), WHM/SCH(or /RDM, or /BLM) - if allowed to participate: DNC/SAM, SCH/WHM(or /RDM) and BLU/WAR(or /WHM)
- Auto-balance rules are applied
- Minimum amount of members per team is 3
- Maximum amount of members per team is 6
- A called game difference of 20 petras will be applied
The rules are not always this static, we do make exceptions - although the points listed are the general outline!

It should be noted, if you are looking to participate in hako matches.. we do not tolerate any rude behaviour or derogatory remarks - to us ballista is a sport; all laws of sportsmanship apply.

The test server Undine, seemed to be the perfect opportunity to hold any kind of ballista, but thus far it was met with only mild success: http://www.ffxiah.com/forum/topic/28447/ballista-test-server/
