Moral of the story: Check the site, and risk trying to turn in a pile of the wrong thing. Or, check the NPC, and risk making an extra trip to the NPC before turning in the correct thing.
Exactly... which is why I posted today to prevent people making that mistake :)

The new rank doesn't have new items (it still uses veteran), and the pattern is usually right. Does the rank Expert differ from Veteran at all?
Not from what I've heard. I got Expert in Goldsmithing, but switched guilds back to fishing immediately, so I don't know first-hand (working on KI for expert fishing atm).

It's often right but if I don't see someone my craft/level submit something definite I'll verify myself. Been burned too many times on Veydal Wrasse, Dark Bass, and the like.

What does this message represent? I know "Something caught the hook!!!" is a large fish and I presumed this was a legendary fish. I must be wrong because i've been spending time catching gigant octopus in vunk {s} for my cooking mule and landed octopus on both this message and the "!!!" one. My fishing is currently at 75 +4 (waders and torque) and even though wiki lists these at 80?? i can barely land em when i do get a bite. Thanks in advance!

Only thing I can think of off hand in Vunk is a Matsya but if I remember correctly you needed EX bait for those.
Not sure what else, maybe a new fish there. Got me wondering now, what bait were you using? I may go see if I can figure out what it is. Kind of bored right now.
Unless it is being triggered by the octopus but doesn't seem too legendary to me :) Could be triggered by length/weight as well I guess. Not really much of a fisherman since the old days!

If I had to guess I would say epic is a fish that is one of the heaviest or longest of that fish, probably in the top 25% range.

You can catch a matasya on the line without a r/e bait. But its extremely unrealible. And certain not going to reel it in without breaking the line. So thats what it probably is

Thats what confused me...it wasnt Matasya it was gigant octopus that I landed with that message. And I was just using Lu Shangs and shrimp lure. Also of note...im getting this message the majority of the time. The ones I dont land I can only get down to about 50% before I run out of time and lose it. idk what lvl these are or what this message is but its irking me. :D

I get this message quite a bit. From my experience it seems to be a bigger fish in its class. Doesn't seem to have any bearing on difficulty.

nothing else would be worth the time. there would be no real point to fishing then, except selling ebisu fish to the die hard fishermen getting an ebisu (for no reason other than completion)

I'm fishing in abyssea because it's cheap, and they sell for 10k as well. I have so many stones idk what to do with them, so I might as well use them to fish.

what do you mean cheap? still uses the same lures :x Plain minnows are still dirt cheap here, not anything like sinking minnows which are nearing 4k. I don't want to hunt the boats right now D:

Lol.. those are so easy to HQ if you know an alchemist with GS sub.. like they are supposed to.. I used to make them all the time for people..

Lol.. those are so easy to HQ if you know an alchemist with GS sub.. like they are supposed to.. I used to make them all the time for people..
and they also take 30 seconds a synth. id rather buy minnows and be done in 3 mins than take 20-40mins
There are fishing topics that come up now and then but mainly are asking a question for a single answer. I know there are many fishers that visit these forums so this is an attempt to get people involved and have a little fun discussing one and only one thing, fishing!
I know Blue Gartr has a Fishing topic already, but I would like to see this community get involved a little bit and talk, since not everyone visits BG. I would love to have a topic just for fishers including veteran fishers, casual fishers, and even players just starting out and want to ask a few questions without being embarrassed about starting a whole topic for a simple answer they could not find.
I only ask that you keep any bot talk to a minimum, preferably none. [Moderator edit: No bot talk] I want this to be a place where we can discuss anything from GP items of the day to what lure/bait to use or what area is best. A quick mention of how you're doing on the lu shang/ebisu quest, how you're doing getting your fishing items from Grounds of Valor, that item you're saving your GP up for, or how much you wish you could hurt Zaldon for not finding anything in your fish for the 10,000th time. Your lucky moment streaks and the moments when you have nothing come your way and question why you started fishing in the first place. Anything that comes to mind, think of it as the random thoughts thread for fishing.
