Which is better?

I'm just wondering what everyone prefers and why when it comes to how they watch their anime.

I personally prefer dubs because if I really wanted to read I would just grab a book and the Japanese voice actors just sound weird to me. That and the usual subtitle font just annoys the hell out of me and distracts me from the rest of the anime.

Don't watch anime, but it seems to me that if you're playing a game that's like 85% Japanese players, and watching TV solely made by the Japanese, you would do well to take some time out of your busy schedule to learn some Japanese and then watch it the way it's meant to be watched.

Of the two choices given, however, subs. Always and forever.

Many italian dubs suck, so most of the time it's better to just stick to the subs. But if they're dubbed well, sure, why should I refuse to enjoy it in my language?

Subs.

99% of the time, the Japanese voice actors portray the character and emotion of the scene a hell of a lot better than American voice actors.

Subs

i use to like dubs cuz like you said i dun want to read, however after watching some sub it really shows that dubs is really a gamble on weather or not it will be good or suck. It also sounds better in the long run cuz for some reason it feels like the voice acting for dubs is either limited or run by a small union lol. Just seen the same voice actor show up too often in the few amount of dubs that i have seen as is.

Depends what I watch the series in first. If first time I see it is subbed, then dubbed voices sound wrong, and vice versa.

certainly dubs. i just feel like the amateur fansubbers just don't have the linguistic expertise of the professionals hired for the official releases. they tend to miss out on a lot of the subtleties that the professional translators of course catch on to.

i like my anime as authentic as possible, so it's dubs all the way!

Subs always. I can glance at them and I don't need to read most of the subs to understand what's going. Dubs just change the story/music too much (music with DBZ for example, completely changes the mood sometimes) and how they pronounce names in dubs can be extremely annoying. I do however like dubbed DBZ and the first Hellsing series.

On the other side though, sometimes dubbers are limited by censorship. God knows how many dialogues' meaning are completely changed because of that :/

nah i hear that never happens

plus i don't think your average weaboo anime fan(subber) is too bright, so i don't feel like i can trust his flawed interpretation of the plotline

i want the official story, as it was intended to be presented

I used to not really care either way.
But recently I've grown to only like subs.

I also don't think I pick up or even care what the voice actors sound like when I don't understand anything outside of "yes" coming from them.

Yu-Gi-Oh.

The world should know the horror that befell that anime.

And as far as I know in USA even One Piece is screwed pretty badly :/

this, but I personally go with subs. However, if given the chance, I will be picky about my fansub group. Sev pretty much hit the nail on the head with less experienced translators, but if you're enough of a weeaboo, you've watched enough anime to be able to note the subtle differences between what's being said and what's been translated on the screen. :3

Plus, missing bits of a scene just because I was reading the text gives me an excuse to watch the episode twice over. :D

They cut ~100 episodes into ~70 for One Piece when 4kids (I think) dubbed it. It was horrible. Lots of changes to storyline, flipped images and "censored" guns (basically turning them into super soakers rofl).

There's has been VERY few Dubs that I actually liked myself.. Ever since Funimation was censoring the *** out of everything and probably changing dialogue.. I never looked back.

The problem is that Anime isn't taken as seriously here in the US than it is in Japan. Most people that they hire to dub have been doing kids cartoon shows for too long.. you can notice it easily. That's not always the case though.

To tell you the truth.. I think the Japan voice actors seem like they put a lot of effort into their work, since it's probably a legitimate job over there. The super high pitched voices sometimes get to me.. but you take what you can get xD

I like both but I'm kinda more into dubs alot more. I don't really see anything that hurts the dubs apart from edited-out scenes and stuff, but I really enjoy it.

if the dub version was still being worked on I would still wait for it and watch sub versions, this is another story :p

Only dub I ever HATED was Love Hina, none of the voices were good, but the worst example was Kitsune. She is from southern Japan and as such speaks with a southern dialect, the dub interpreted this as a southern accent and made her have this funky HOWDY Y'ALL kinda accent. It was just really really bad.

The problem is that a lot of the dubs have been translated incorrectly and just screw up a lot of the story. Changing the music can also screw up a whole scene, like in (again, lol) DBZ. Sometimes they change jokes (understandable of course, puns are basically impossible to translate) or just change the dialogue entirely because it doesn't flow well in English and it ends up not having anything to do with the situation at hand.

I wouldn't mind dubs if they were better translated and the voice actors actually gave a damn (like in games, except for JRPGs because they still suckkkkkkkkkk there) but as it is now I'll just stick to subs.

Some anime you have to watch with subs, though, especially when the characters use Engrish. :3
