Quote: Researchers at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine have been studying the effects of psilocybin, a chemical found in some psychedelic mushrooms, that's credited with inducing transcendental states. Now, they say, they've zeroed in on the perfect dosage level to produce transformative mystical and spiritual experiences that offer long-lasting life-changing benefits, while carrying little risk of negative reactions.

It's about time they looked into a more naturally occurring drug to treat depression. Personally I think most of the anti-depressants on the market are useless and may cause more problems than they try to treat.
What do you think?

I think marijuana is used more for anti-anxiety than depression.

Yeah, I was being a smartass. However, I've never been high and depressed at the same time, so maybe there is something to it!

But what if you're smoking weed because you're depressed?

Although I think the psilocybin is more of a long term effect than the short term effect of marijuana.

Apparently it can be used for anxiety too. They've also said it helps with relationships and PTSD.
They've also explored into MDMA (ecstasy) and surprisingly enough ketamine for all these problems as well.

I wish this study would have released it's information. I'm interested to see how many good/bad trips these people had, under what dose, and who/how many "long lasting side effects" each person had after the trip.
In most cases under and normal dose the environment(who your with, and what your doing) is going to dictate what kind of trip you have, but the after effects are necessarily going be be the same as your trip. You can have a horrible trip but after its over feel have good effects from having the trip, and the opposite is entirely possible to happen too.
But as most people imagine you can have a good trip and good lasting effects, or a Bad trip with bad lasting effects.
The brain and hallucinogens are just such a complicated subject it typically comes down to the individual and every single one of their life's events and current situation to dictate how the trip goes, and not the dose.

I ate a 1/4 ounce of shrooms (heavier dose) every other week for eight weeks (two months). To anyone that doesn't know, you can't shroom out on consecutive days (or weeks for my body chemistry) - it just doesn't work you don't get high.
As someone who has significant experience with this drug, I only had a couple of good experiences and the rest made me hate life. It pinpointed everything in my life that had gone wrong and I saw absolutely no hope in the near future. I know body chemistries are different, but people do have bad trips and these bad trips could make an already depressed person much worse. I just don't see psilocybin being used medicinally, it's kind of like playing russian roulette.

I doubt the doses are 'high'.. Even so, there will never be a cure-all for anything.. There will always be some that don't react the same as most everyone else.. If this actually works, the difference here is most all RX depression meds have a long list of negative side effects (some including suicidal thoughts/actions, so it's not like your negative experience wouldn't happen to someone on 'approved RX medications) and chances are you're going to get a few of them..

I'd say that's because you did it wrong. There are the crowd of kids that think it's cool to do acid and go see Alice in Wonderland. That's stupid, it isn't actively recreational like weed or alcohol - it isn't something you enjoy with your night out for dinner.
There's an experience you can pinpoint on those drugs and that's all you need to discover, just once. Doing it repeatedly to try to recreate that almost always fails, and simply turns walking around with your friends into walking around with your friends and the sidewalk is breathing. The 'one time' involves being on a mountain floating above the city and having your back massaged by a friendly cat that happened to follow you up the mountain and the hill was made of lizards.

I'm all for medical research on this kinda stuff. Very interesting read. Although my experiences with the drug have usually been bad (mostly because of very high doses) there were many times were I did have a great time and felt very "High on life".

lol dude its in the first paragraph, it just doesnt say what the dose is.
Also scientists arnt growing mushrooms and feeding them to their subjects.
Even when they test cocaine and marijuana they don't use those methods. They always use some extracted type of substance anyways, almost always the pure chemical in its liquid form.

Any 'medication' is going to have negative effects in some people. If what they're claiming is true, this is, by a long shot better than anti-depression RX drugs.. I've been on quite a few different ones in my life and they all have one thing in common, negative side effects, some make you feel sick, some change your personality for the worse, some cause physical problems, like irreversible muscle spasms (which I have).. He said that this would be like playing Russian Roulette, well what do you think a doctor is doing when they prescribe you pharmaceutical anti-depressants? They have no idea if that drug is going to work for you or not, they have no idea how you will react to it..
Also he admitted to being a heavy user, using heavy doses for long periods of time. There are a lot of things that come into play on how the trip will play out when it comes to stuff like this, but it's pretty safe to say having used less would probably have gave an overall better experience. Compare it to drinking too much in one sitting or too often if you want, it's really not all that different.
All that said, this wouldn't be right for everyone. Again, there never will be a magical cure-all for anything, ever.
