Questions for the moderators:
1. Why not continue to play FFXI? 2. If there was one thing you wished all forums users would do more of, what would it be? Let's get beyond the obvious answers ("everyone play nice", "everyone always be respectful of all others", etc.), if possible. 3. This is a more abstract question, but I think it's relevant to forums "behavior". Do you each feel that the "new forums rules" have had a positive effect on the community? If so, in what ways have you observed improvements? If not, what have you observed to be worse now? And either way, what more would you do (if you had your way) to improve the website even further, going forward? Bahamut.Serj said: Ramuh.Urial said: OMG it's Serj. I just finished my first year as a computer science major and I'm really starting to get into programming. For now, all I've used is Java. I made a final project that was all command line and ran a simulation based on information received from a text file. I want to take a jump ahead and now either make a GUI and make it work with a MySQL database! :D But I know how to do neither! Which do you feel I should learn first based on how important they are? I can't decide which is more important; usability or functionality. 1) I was getting busy with RL, and Abyssea killed things for me from the second one on. I don't have a desire to play anymore. I miss the oldschool FFXI.
2) Read the rules before posting. 3) I think it has had a positive effect, and I think we're on the right track. I only know people who have traveled there for relief and/or missionary work after Haiti's earthquake. Went there for vacation. Only thing that sucked was in the places outside of the main city, if the electricity went out, that meant the hot water went out and you can be a few days without hot water. So taking a shower in ice cold water was horrible. But yes everything there is pretty, there's a party every night, even a club on a boat in the main part of the city. definitely fun to go though. Bismarck.Elanabelle said: Questions for the moderators: 1. Why not continue to play FFXI? I quit ffxi, was too far behind on that and lost my interest in it. Quote: 2. When I tried to at least guide ppl to stop cussing so much, stop posting graphic material, etc. they would'nt listen... And now that the rules are set, now they have to listen or GTFO. Lakshmi.Jaerik said: Cerberus.Jiko said: More for Scragg or Jaerik, but can it be possible to add missing crafting recipes (via member submission, or admin) to items that dont currently have them? One I can think of off hand would be an Argent coat, and im sure theres plenty of more out there. It would be a big help for us crafters! ^^ Our site philosophy is precisely the opposite. Mainly, "untouched by human hands." If we can automatically collect / parse / scrape it, we put it up there. If a user (or even an admin) has to apply judgment to what should be empirical data, then we've failed. If a recipe is wrong, well... I'm pretty sure admins or mods can correct it when reported. But it requires a manual verification process from our end. It's just, that's all great, but when I look at equipment, or something I want to buy or make, I want to know how much exactly is it going to cost to make. Would it be better to buy in bulk than just a single one. Would I loose too much gil buying off the AH than going to an NPC. These are all the questions that go through my mind when I want to make something. But when there is an item without a recipe on this site I feel that I am having to go out of my way to do the work to find the price of the item. When you have a recipe list the ingredients and you know what its going to cost on your server, it is a huge time saver. It does take traffic away from GE/Wikia/bg but those sites cant provide the current prices on your server either. Your going to just come back to this one anyways to find the item after you find the recipe for it and search for all the ingredients. I understand it takes someone to manually input each recipe and maybe a new moderator could do that. I don't see the reason why we should have to spend 5 more minutes per recipe to find the prices and calculate it ourselves when the item page could potentially do that for us, instantly. Pros: It saves the users time, and a more knowledgeable understanding of what they are putting their gil into. Cons: It takes traffic away from partner sites. Partner sites can't provide the current price of the item your looking for on your server. The only place for that is here, that is why people come to this site when they are looking for item prices. The only other element that is missing is NPC prices which fair enough can still be listed on partner sites. I personally think it would benefit people here greatly saving players gil. I can't tell you how many times I've seen people waste their gil on echo drops buying off the AH instead of NPC, when the NPC's are in the same locations as the AH (yes I know that echo drops pages has npc prices, its just an example). Thousands of transactions of overprices common items with so much gil being wasted. True, its their own dumb fault for doing so, but that is besides the point. You might say, "Well that page has NPC prices and people already buy it overpriced. It obviously isn't helping!", well, I highly doubt that only 12 stacks of echo drops are used a day in an entire server. Think about the number that would be if it wasn't displayed, it probably would be double, or triple that amount. My point is, it educated people enough that they stopped going to the AH for echo drops and started buying off the NPC for the lowest price possible ultimately saving their gil. Multiply that by how many people do that instead of the AH and you just helped save millions of gil a week just off of echo drops (maybe not so much now since, in my opinion, I haven't been silenced as much as I use to be a few years ago which seems strange). I think that this site should be dedicated for the use of the public to make educated decisions about their gil, and when the item pages do not list a recipe I feel that takes away from the experience. It makes the users do unnecessary research and when they, for example, are looking for an item to craft at their level (that isn't listed in recipes) and having to look up multiple items to make a decision of what they want to do, their biggest advantage is time. The more time they can save making their decision the quicker and easier it will be for them. If you have to look at 5 items and all 5 items don't list the recipes, you'll have to look up 25+ more items and organize the information yourself to make a smart decision. Most new recipes are not included in this and that is why I bring it up. "But its only 5 minutes, I'm sure you could spare that looking up a recipe." Five minutes for 1 user isn't that much, but when a few hundred people stop by for research that 5 minutes turns into a few hundred minutes. My point is, I think that FFXIAH shouldn't worry about taking away the spotlight of partner sites, because people come back here anyways to search for 5 or more items anyways to find the prices of those. If all they are doing is going to that site to find a recipe and come back for the prices what is the point? I think there is no valid argument why this site shouldn't take advantage of this. I've always wondered why this site didn't keep up with synergy either almost like your treating it like its not a craft. It uses items just like crafting does, and the process is pretty much the same. Just uses a different system to create the item but the process is the same in the end, you get an item or you HQ it. I understand that the admin/mods no longer play FFXI and the motivation to do this probably is nonexistent. That doesn't mean people here wouldn't volunteer to contribute filling in missing recipes and creating a synergy one. Wauw. Well I'm up for the challenge since I'm kinda bored this summer, and I've got a knack for boring, OCD-worthy tasks.
(Feeling like I might regret this, though! :o) AND I STILL PLAY FFXI, DAMMIT! XD Question for Anye.
Will you do this weeks MS Paint!?!?!? It's Portal! |
