Yea - some people like taking artificial stimulants but I use natural ones. 5 cups of coffee isn't really that much overall; 500mg caffeine over the course of a few hours is pretty minimal. If you look at a lot of pre-workout drinks and fat burners, they all have like 100-200mg caffeine per pill/dose and a ***ton of b12 and niacin - all the same ***if you ask me. 5 cups of coffee isn't gonna kill you like ephedra.
Yeah a lot of the pre-workout/fat burners are over-priced Monster/Rockstar basically. The Hodgetwins had a video a few months back comparing some pre-workouts to Monster ingredients.
DMAA, which got the FDA ban-hammer is a different story now! That ***was like crack during your workout!

DMAA isn't something I'm interested in either, like ephedra, its sketchy.

DMAA is not banned (yet) in the US. They issued a warning, for whatever that's worth, and USP Labs has made DMAA-free versions of their popular supps, OEP and Jack3d. My experience with DMAA has been minimal to awesome. Some cycles I have been super-focused in all aspects of life, and others I could barely tell the difference between taking it and not. At any rate, these bans are BS, since they incidents are incredibly rare, especially compared to other commonplace medications, such as Tylenol. Also, obesity is far more dangerous than ephedra. In DMAA's case, the attention-grabbing casualties were a couple of guys who took too much before starting their day at boot camp. You have to know what you are doing to take these, but if handled with common sense and the correct information, they are harmless.

Thats the problem really. Almost every I know that takes stuff doesnt know why they take X product, just because they're told to or some ***other reason. Common sense here is practically nil on a good day.
I find alot of the people that I know/talk to at the gym are just trying to take the shortest route possible to get big. Not strong, not healthy, just big and nothing more. They're almost all fat muscle guys who take what seem to be bad and sometimes maybe even dangerous short cuts.
People dont care about the danger side of it until after it collapses out from under them
edit: And of course bad press gets more attention than good press

Tiger what should a 33 y/o male who hasn't worked out in 5+ years do to drop 50 pounds. Not looking to get skinny and lanky or loose muscle - just shed the fat without a regime that requires round the clock dedication. Too busy for that ***now. My work kills me, by the time I get home at 6/7/8 PM all i have the energy to do is become a vegetable.

Well, you're going to have to do some activity, so you'll need the will power not to be a vegetable.
That being said, you can lose weight via diet. If you're drinking anything with calories, stop. That's usually the largest source of empty calories you can get.
Switching from soda, milk, juice, anything really to just water will go a long way.
Then of course, you can make eating changes as well.

In highschool I was part of the rugby varsity team and was an amateur HW boxer since I was 16, but I weighed 300 pounds at age 18 and 6'3. I was a big ***. In my first year of college I shrank down to 200 pounds reducing my gym weight lifting routine and increasing the cardio, switching from a carb heavy diet to a protein based diet. Got faster, fitter and felt all around better but lost way too much strength for my own liking. After 6 years of being that light I started packing on the pounds and working towards lifting heavy again. It went horribly wrong lol. I stopped the cardio and only focused on lifting. 7 years later and more XI than I should have indulged in and I'm a good 50 pounds, pure fat, over weight.
Do I try to replicate the success I had when I was younger, or do I do the 8 small meals plan (usually makes me very violent, too energetic like I'm on speed, and sexual drive becomes something I can't handle)

What is "too long?"
And what are the signs/symptoms of "it" - and does "it" have a name like a disease or something due to prolonged protein diet?

I'll text her now and find out. There is an official name for it yeah but I dont know it off hand,I'll also get the official symptoms from her too. All I do remember is lack of carbs (among other things) and relying too much on protein for everything will damage your ability to grow properly and produce certain chemicals later on. But I'll wait for her reply anyways

From my understanding the companies, other companies besides usp labs had it too just fyi, lied about it and said it derived from geraniums when it was completely synthetic.
But that's semi irrelevant, @quiznor is spot on about people misusing products. You have significantly over weight individuals who often have other related health issues e.g high blood pressure that use this crap then die of heart attacks.

I also would like some advice. About a year ago I was down to 140 in weight and a size 4 in jeans, but neglected it and am now back up to 160ish and a size 11... although waist is probably back around 28-30 inches. I've been doing some exercise, mostly dvd workouts (Shaun T hip hop abs and rockin body) but there's not been any improvement in the size of my thighs, which prohibit wearing smaller jeans. How can I slim down my thighs and try to get back on track to being 140ish again? Please don't say running, because I hate to run and have since elementary school.

First off, don't think that it is "too late" do do anything about weight issues. After a knee injury I ended up packing on pounds from not being able to run and I never changed my diet.
I joined a gym, got a personal trainer and he came up with a diet plan that worked to help keep the fat off.
The thing with this though is, YOU NEED TO STICK TO IT! If you can do that then you will see results (at least I do)
You should eat more often. But limit how much and what is it you eat. For example:
breakfast: 1/2 cup oatmeal, 4-5 egg whites, apple
snack: protein shake, banana
lunch: 4-6 oz ground turkey, 1/2 cup veggies, 1/2 brown rice
snack: apple (if weight training additional protein)
dinner: see lunch
snack: (again if training, protein)
*all measurements are raw
You can change it up a bit but you have to watch what you make swaps with. choosing 4-6 oz of bacon over turkey may not be your best choice. Also, consider what you are putting into your oatmeal.
The idea with this sort of diet is to kickstart your metabolism. If your body is getting food(energy) on a regular schedule then it eventually starts to use only what it needs and passes the rest. If you start skipping meals then your body goes into "panic mode" and stores everything it gets in case it no longer gets food(energy).
Now don't quote me on any of this, this ia all what my trainer has told me and it works(for me at least) so I'm not going to question the physics behind it.

If you want to get a quick boost, follow these simple changes for an initial noticeable change:
1. Swap out EVERY drink for water, and drink at least 1 gallon a day.
2. Eat high-protein, low-carb. If you are not an expert chef, eggs are your friend. If you need fast food options, Wendy's chili and Chick-Fil-A strips (especially grilled) with regular mustard will help, and you can pick up salads at both places.
3. I hate running, but elliptical is manageable. If you don't have one, go for a 15-minute walk 2 times/day.
4. Snacking should be nothing if not raw vegetables. Baby carrots help. (We are not going 0-carb).
5. Sleep 7-8 hours every night.
This is not difficult or overly restrictive, and not only will you see results in a couple of days, you will feel better and desire to follow the guidelines. If you have trouble with cravings, cut out the TV for a few days. Food advertisers know when to target you and they are effective.

I've kinda plateaued and don't know what else to really do. Little worried because right now I work a very labor intensive job and it is looking like I may get this new job which will be a lot more sitting around.
Right now my daily meal looks like
Breakfast: Protein shake (ON Pro formula)
Lunch: Kind of mid protein and carbs (usually some kind of chicken and like coleslaw). I live out of my truck, so kinda work with what I have.
Snack: Protein bar or beef jerky
Dinner: Usually high in protein and not terrible on carbs. The worst I do is spaghetti and even then use veggie noodles.
Drink plenty of water and do cardio at least 3x week, but been at 240 for over a month now. I'm just looking to slim down, not put on muscle at the moment so that's why I stopped doing weight training. I actually started to lose more number wise after that and I'm down two pant sizes.
Just worried that I'll start gaining back my loses if I change jobs and I'm not moving and on my feet all day like I am now. Any suggestions on what else I could do aside from more cardio to prevent this?
By taruunie 2013-04-16 15:13:33
Thanks Gitanti and Tenshibaby. I'm not sure which foods would be high-protein and low-carb, I know protein would be meats like chicken though, which I do eat quite a bit of. Would switching to fish help any or no? I'm also not an oatmeal person.. here is what I eat almost daily:
breakfast: cup of either plain/chocolate milk and 1 banana (chocolate milk is only on day off work)
lunch: ensure drink, water with mio along with pretzels
dinner: just whatever I can find to eat, sometimes fast food/chinese/some sort of meat with pasta
I'm not fond of raw veggies, but would fruits be able to take place of veggies? Like apples/grapes?

I recommend MyFitnessPal app. You can search and log most foods. Despite what people have traditionally said, weight changes are NOT strictly "calorie eaten minus calories burned". If you are really plateaued though, you may look into changing things up a bit, such as intermittent fasting (easy for me, just eat all your food between noon and 8 PM), going on a short-term carb-free diet (about 1 week), or alternating high-cal/low-cal days. You need to calculate your BMR (easier said than done, depends on your height and age) and aim at no more than 7000 calories below PER WEEK.

Most meats/cheeses and eggs are zero carbs or close to it. Tofu is good, too. Fish is an excellent choice, just don't eat the ones at risk of mercury content more than 2 servings/week (tuna and salmon are the most common with mercury). Unfortunately you cannot easily swap fruits for vegetables. They are typically higher in sugar and lower in fiber. You may like some vegetables if you get used to them. Baby carrots are pretty palatable. If you must eat fruit, apples WITH PEELS are not too bad. You can't eat them super-fast, and the peels contain hunger-controlling compounds. It sounds like you are starving yourself then having a really bad dinner. You should spread your calories out.

You may not be getting enough calories. Do you have a smart phone? I recommend MyFitnessPal app. You can search and log most foods. Despite what people have traditionally said, weight changes are NOT strictly "calorie eaten minus calories burned". If you are really plateaued though, you may look into changing things up a bit, such as intermittent fasting (easy for me, just eat all your food between noon and 8 PM), going on a short-term carb-free diet (about 1 week), or alternating high-cal/low-cal days. You need to calculate your BMR (easier said than done, depends on your height and age) and aim at no more than 7000 calories below PER WEEK.
7000 deficiency per week or 1,000 per day is fine?
All the "experts" always told me "don't reduce your calories by 500 per day/3,500 per week or 1 pound weight loss per week"
That's also with the output/input overall net loss of cutting calories and increasing activity.
7,000/week is 2 pounds weight loss per week. Will lifting weights combined with cardio allow one to keep muscle yet still burn fat?

The general rule is 1-2 lbs per week. If you are exercising, you should replace the net burned calories as well. Depending on the cardio and the intensity levels, you may not be burning THAT many calories more (cardio has its own benefits, but people have different opinions on its effects on T level, etc.). If you can keep track of your average heart rate, you can input the average HR and the duration to find out a decent estimate.
This thread is basically for discussing workouts and dietary intake for people who are trying to or looking to getting into better shape or eating healthier in general.
Any and all questions regarding either of the two can be asked and hopefully answered here as well.
