If you notice, the Japanese players are more pissed off about FFXI being off than anyone.

The JP version of the thread on the FFXI forums that states FFXI servers will be down is at 22,000 views. The NA version only has 13,000. Take that into consideration.

The only thing that got me away from this game was after 6-7 years of playing, my core friends slowly all left it. But once your friends leave or go to a different game and you join up with some of them there, things are alright again. I guess the level breaks annonucement above 75 helped me along too, it helped me realize that I played the game for my friends, not for 6 years of gear and numbers of stats/levels in pixels to wind up as useless in the end. Then trust me, you won't have a problem uninstalling this archaic crap if you force yourself to move onto something else that interests you.

I've played the "newer" games and most of them suck in comparison(my opinion). Game mechanics, party systems, etc etc. I'm a FFXI lifer and when ffxi dies, my mmo career will too, prlly. I'm just so addicted to it. I've had friends come and go. Most I can connect/chat/blog/whatever with regularly so its ok. Imo, there's still not an mmo out there thats as fun as ffxi to me. For me, xi hit the nail squarely on the head. It's just what I've always wanted out of an mmo.

Yes Drexler. There is a FFXI rehab. The therapy is brutal, expensive, and NOT for the faint of heart...

I dont know if its been mentioned, but I do know that if SE has virtualized their servers, moving them to another facility would be easier. I think this crisis brings up the point about disaster recovery for medium and large businesses(not just games/entertainiment related). Now I know there is more that goes on with it(support staff, etc), but it would be a lot easier just moving the virtual images("guests") than having to move a couple dozen physical servers. And while ill admit I dont know all that goes on behind the scenes, FFXI is basically an application front end, with a database backend, something like SQL or Oracle(insert obligatory joke about it being an access 97 database), and a high speed internet connection.

I know its hard to forsee disaters like this, but with our increasing dependance on IT infrastructure, this should be a wake up call to businesses who dont have a solid DR plan in place.

Hold on, let me make sure I understand this. So you're saying that it's primarily the game itself that makes you stick around and not really about your friends that come and go? So, for example, if the game was stand-alone like p-XI was before SE threatened to sue if they didn't go away, then you'd stay on that? If this is true, then my input wont help. I'd say take up Liltrouble's advice in that case. Just don't meet any women and that takes a lot of potential expense and gray hairs out of the equation. Stick with the lube and cesil pics.

Ok, yall goin a lil overboard with this thing. I appreciate the advise and all that. Is it ok for me to really, really, really enjoy playing a video game? I really was having alot of fun before the servers shutdown. I already got 2 children and all that, why my personal life should be put on Jump Street is really a "nunya" situation. I guarantee I'm not the only one who is "fiending" to play some ffxi right now. That's all I was saying. But if amusing yourselves at my expense helps you cope, then be all means...

Different strokes for different folks.

Some people enjoy botting, some people enjoy playing legit. Some people enjoy playing for the grind, whilst others enjoy playing for the social aspect.

The list goes on.

There's nothing wrong with people enjoying a game how they want to.

Since 50% + of the people who play this game are in the US, wouldn't it be a smart idea to have backup servers here?

Cerb is like this?!?! I think you'll find this figure is wildly inaccurate :s (not going to go into the move servers suggestion as its been beaten to death already)

Do a /sea all in JP prime and then EU/NA times.

If anything its the other way round, someone mentioned earlier the SE forum has almost double the hits on the JP version.

As stated earlier also, there is a reason that updates have always been in EU/NA primetimes.

P.S Forgotten who said the generator comment but srsly.... i hope you were kidding lol. What a fantastic use of fuel resources in the current climate that would be!!

Personally im using this time to tidy up my odds and ends trophies on the PS3 then I will think about going outside...... maybe.

Would you guys have paid $30/month per account for the past 9 years to support having a backup facility that whole time?

Hell, would you have picked up the game at all, at that rate?

where is that random number from?

Random or not the point is the same, it would probably be more tbh.

Point being would you have paid considerably more for 9 years JUST IN CASE a tsunami hits and you cant get your game fix for a few weeks.

If it's $15/month to have one facility, one would assume it would cost roughly twice as much to have a complete copy of everything necessary, and maintain the necessary margin for SE.

Could be more, could be slightly less, no way of knowing. Especially if you're talking about cost differences across entire countries. But if you want a hot-swap backup copy of the entire facility, someone's gotta pay for it.

Crystal Dynamics is just a development studio. They wouldn't be equipped or able to maintain the type of server facilities that FF uses.

More a reply to the original quote, but stuff like this is pretty impressive. I'd almost say unbelievable in the circumstances if the site wasn't official, lol.

ohhhhh you make me remind, montreal was a "flood" few days ago.We had like 1-2 feet of water in the streets.Me and my hubby decided to go buy a PCI adapter for our other pc.Usually its a 15 mins walk, that day took 2hr +.We were totally wet and to give us some boost, we start making jokes like: "ok so we mario and luigi trying to save the princess peach, let's pass trough this flooding adventure!" we lost our head that day.....
Montreal players? thought they were a myth... xD

They aren't lol, i'm also from Montreal lol, although i'm surprised to see there's more people on this forum from Montreal too.

And yes, i do remember that flood in Montreal a little while ago, it was an aquatic hell... just going to the grocery nearby was an adventure in itself...and not a pleasant one to say the least.

gonna say this line in french: J'hais la calisse de pluie sale.

A fair question.
I, for one, would not have paid $30 per month for FFXI. If I were single, etc., that cost may have been ok, but with a family, forget it.

It's impossible to predict the future, and obviously S-E has reasons for housing their servers in Japan. However, in hindsight, considering the extreme history of seismic activity around the Japanese islands, maybe Japan isn't the smartest place to house physical servers for an international online business.
Of course, coastal California wouldn't really be a better option, based on tectonic activity.

30 isnt bad. Back when I got ban #1, A few of my LS mates were a bit poor so I had put their accounts on my CC and I had a couple mule/alt accounts for tanking and fishing. SE turned it around and flagged it as RMT due to the amount of the accounts on the same card and banned us all. It sucked at the time.

In hindsight it was lulz but back when I was into it, I didn't mind paying nearly 100 a month. Was cheaper than most my other bills anyway. I guess SE did me a favor though because if I did that for a couple years rather than just a few months, I would have spent thousands on pixels at that point. The only people HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE enough to do that are relic buyers.
