GE is saying that they are not responsible, because the reactors have been modified.
Fukushima: Mark 1 Nuclear Reactor Design Caused GE Scientist To Quit In Protest
Quote: "The problems we identified in 1975 were that, in doing the design of the containment, they did not take into account the dynamic loads that could be experienced with a loss of coolant," Bridenbaugh told ABC News in an interview. "The impact loads the containment would receive by this very rapid release of energy could tear the containment apart and create an uncontrolled release."
Were they GE Pumps/generators.. and were they modifed, after they were installed??? If they were modified after.. that would be like me purchasing a brand new pump or a motor for my car and, right away, b.c of modifications... you're def breaking the warranty.
They were modified, because of the design flaw says GE later on....

Quote: ABC News asked GE for more detail about how the company responded to critiques of its Mark 1 design. GE spokesman Michael Tetuan said in an email that, over the past 40 years, the company has made several modifications to its Mark 1 reactors in the U.S., including installing "quenchers" and fortifying the steel structures "to accommodate the loads that were generated." He said that GE's responses to modifications ordered by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission were also shared with the Japanese nuclear industry.

And how the government doesn't want people to have it because they'd rather spend money on bomb shelters? It's bringing out the crazy people but at least it's giving us a few laughs :/ No they don't want people to have it because it is a waste of money and most people probably wont take enough to help even if we were in a situation where it could. And even at lower doses but especially at the high doses needed for this there are potentially major side effects.

Was there any news from The Japanese side of all of this? Did they have a say re: what GE had mentioned?

BBC:
Quote: 2226: Nick Bikkal from Tokyo writes: "I live within Tokyo city limits. I keep reading of radiation coming into the city from the plant 200 km north of us. Technically NE of the city. Embassies are urging their citizens to leave the city and country. How can radioactivity head our way when for the last few days all the weather reports have said the wind keeps blowing from the west or NW? The official weather reports back up my statement. Either I'm still underinformed or am being misinformed. Family and friends abroad are in a panic over me and my family but I say there is an attempt to confuse and create panic. It's a media tactic to keep people glued to them. I see little support given to those working hard to help, clean up&rescue. Instead of running away people should give what they can to those in need." Have Your Say
Quote: 2231: John Luke from Nerimaku, Tokyo writes: "Remember, many people are wearing masks now because it's 'hay-fever season' NOT because they are worried about radiation. Your report gives the impression people are wearing masks because of fear. Please correct this."Have Your Say
Quote: 2244: Mark MacKinnon of the Globe and Mail tweets: "More alarming warnings from embassies in Tokyo suggesting citizens leave. Not bc of radiation, but bc supplies of food, fuel running low."

Quote: 0106: This is no easy task for the chopper crews. They can't afford to hover above the reactors because of the radiation so they are making the drops in passing.
Quote: 0108: The reason Reactor 3 got the first shower is because of escaping smoke or steam, indicating water evaporating from the cooling pool, Reuters news agency notes.
Quote: 0110: And US nuclear experts believe there is no water left in Reactor 4's cooling pool, meaning radiation levels are extremely high there.
They are also gonna try to bring the police water cannons as it would take 200 passes w/the helicopters as reported by NHK

I've heard some crazy stories from today. People want to take it because the news is trying to "trick" them saying they shouldn't when they mean that they should. But I shouldn't worry because I work in a Pharmacy and we have a special Coating over our building to protect us.... yep. o.O;;

That many thousands of miles away if you were in danger from the radiation itself the people of japan would be melting... literally. And besides the iodine doesn't protect from radiation anyways. Only sorta limits your absorption of 1 fission product gas. And since it's floating in the air it's your ventilation system that really matters... but again if there is so much that it can float across the entire pacific ocean in concentrations to worry about... the people of japan are already ***. I mean common sense people.
I mean ***I doubt people got this worried when we dropped mother *** nuclear bombs on japan... ya know things designed to spread outward highly radioactive stuff for miles and miles regardless of wind conditions...
I bet the people in china get more exposure from there coal plants this year than the average person in japan gets from this

I know this thread is about Japan, but there is a lil bit of Chernobyl( Why are ppl saying T-Chernobyl, unless its a spelling error or its a Belrussian pronouciation of it..) so I saw a link and wanted to share some pics of Chernobyl and its surrounding areas, and how its doing since 1986. Wow I cannot believe its 2011, 25 years.... holy cow.....Time taking its toll...
Chernobyl and its surrounding areas...25 yrs later...

Hope noone is getting hopes up for the servers coming back on anytime soon.It would seem like a very selfish act if they did turn the servers back on in a time such as this.

I think this is all that needs to be said about the overreacting going on. Very small amount of radiation coming from 200 km away and in the opposite direction of where the wind is blowing... Yea.
Also. Holy ***. People in the US are trying to buy KI because of this??? As Das said, Japan would have to be a smoldering radioactive hole in the earth for it to bother us.
How can you inform the drama-craving ignorant masses? I would really like to know. I watched CNN for about an hour today and it baffled me. This site has the best pool of information about all of this..

Well once this is semi under control they can at least think of bringing the other reactors back up which I don't think they've done which should help the power issues alot. And well people do need something to take there mind off stuff.

I think this is all that needs to be said about the overreacting going on. Very small amount of radiation coming from 200 km away and in the opposite direction of where the wind is blowing... Yea. Well the actual radiation doesn't care about the wind. It just radiates in straight lines. Like light and such. But it disperse rather quickly. The wind just carries the gasses and particulates that can emit radation too.
I1/ I2 = D2^2/ D1^2
Where:
I1 = Intensity 1 at D1
I2 = Intensity 2 at D2
D1 = Distance 1 from source
D2 = Distance 2 from source
So let's we have idk something really high like 10rem/hr 1km away... that would be .25mrem/hr at 200km away. Which granted is still more than you should be exposed to over long periods of time, but that's not really that much more than a radiation working can get on average.

Some of the population of FFXI, you have to remember are Japanese, so we will get the information upfront, from people, families and friends, rather than second rate news from a prestigious news company.
You have to remember, all news companies will try to put their own spin on things, to make their news look alot better than Joe News Bradacaster Inc.

What pissed me off the most its I do have Japanese friends.. And this game was certainly the only way for me to communicated with them... Since the tragedy I have no news of them so on a side of my hand it's yes I do wish the game comes back as fast as possible but on the otherside I wish that everyone are safe and the casualties stops for good I would really love to have more information and would love the fact that my jp friends are safe also I don't know if they are still alive or dead...
