Japan Earthquake/Tsunami

Especially for land based reactors. mitnse said: One of the fundamental tenets of nuclear power plant design is “Defense in Depth.” This approach leads engineers to design a plant that can withstand severe catastrophes, even when several systems fail. A large tsunami that disables all the diesel generators at once is such a scenario, but the tsunami of March 11th was beyond all expectations. To mitigate such an event, engineers designed an extra line of defense by putting everything into the containment structure (see above), that is designed to contain everything inside the structure. Ragnarok.Anye said: Bahamut.Dasva said: And it seemed at times they placed potential bad PR and slight health risks over reactor safety mitnse said: As mentioned previously, steam and other gases are vented. Some of these gases are radioactive fission products, but they exist in small quantities. Therefore, when the operators started venting the system, some radioactive gases were released to the environment in a controlled manner (ie in small quantities through filters and scrubbers). While some of these gases are radioactive, they did not pose a significant risk to public safety to even the workers on site. This procedure is justified as its consequences are very low, especially when compared to the potential consequences of not venting and risking the containment structures’ integrity. They will see the news and fear stuff they don't understand and completely ignore all the huge problems with other stuff. I mean gulf stream oil spill anyone? At this point this situation probably can't even get that bad unless someone bombed the reactors... or all the major mine accidents. Or just how much more radiation is released from burning fossil fuels than from nuclear plants... even with this accident there is still probably more released this year from burning coal than all of nuclear power total. But people love big stories and talking about stuff. However I don't this will cause a huge return to fossil fuels. I doubt we will reverse all the huge restrictions that we have been placing on them for so long. No one wants to have there air look like chinas. Which makes them much less cost efficient. Probably why all the news here is screaming Armageddon, while BBC has had 3 or 4 Nuclear Physicists on saying "eh, no big deal, dun worry about it 'til there's something to worry about." If anything I feel this is a proponent for nuclear energy. But I'm no pessimist either. I've always felt Nuclear power is safe, I don't live particularly far from the San Onofre power station either, so it's not like I say this as "Hey, I'm not near it so whutevs lol!" I personally agree, that such a disaster couldn't cause an uncontrollable catastrophe is just testament to how safe Nuclear Power is, on top of the perfect storm of cascading *** afterward. The "go to" for Nuclear catastrophe is of course, Chernobyl, but if you read a little bit into it, you can't help but think it was designed to explode in the first place. however, we seem to be sane, rational people, and in America, that's a minority. I grew up around Kodak's headquarters in the 80s, before it was discovered that the neighborhood I lived in was being flooded with airborne waste. Not to mention all the life in the Adirondack lakes were dying.. However, I believe the architects of the San Onofre station have imbued it with the power of Dolly Parton, which should protect us from any significant natural disasters. Asura.Catastrophe said: Reuters said: (Reuters) - "Minute levels" of radiation have been detected in the Japanese capital, Tokyo, Kyodo news agency said, quoting the metropolitan government. They had found iodine and cesium but it was not immediately clear if it was linked to the damaged nuclear plant in the northeast. It also said that radiation levels in Saitama, near Tokyo, were 40 times normal levels, quoting the local government.
