Don't understand how you could even talk down about The Mars Volta... lol.

True, but in some cases the obvious talent behind individuals should be irrelevant to taste. I think Volta fall in that category whether they're your cup of tea or not. There's no denying they are seriously talented musicians.
Hell, I hate the majority of pop music but there's some damn fine singers out there. Just because I don't personally like their style or their songs doesn't make them any less of a musician!
And if anyone quotes this and says Bieber I will knife you. Forewarned!

lol, naw I'm not that abrasive, it was more of a sarcastic comment. I understand everyone has different tastes, which is why I said it may not be your "type" of music, but it's pretty easy to recognize talent and at least acknowledge the creativity and effort someone else put into something they're passionate about.

I like just watching episodes of Jools Holland. I'm never let down by a line up he has.
This is just one of the best songs I've ever heard. It's so chilling (in the make your back hairs itch sense, not the mellow sense.)

I don't think it's that easy to recognize talent... If you talked to my parents they would listen to that and call it noise lol... terrible noise... There really is no universal standard for what "good" music is and it's really based so much off of personal opinion... It's argued amongst those who just listen and the critics... It just all seems so subjective to me...

I think it has to do with how those well versed in the study of music and its inner mechanics can break down and analyze an artist's works and finding the ingenuity therein.
