so my buddy is getting me a late xmas present and idk if i should have him buy me a nintendo ds lite or a Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows anyone got an idea which to pick?

Get the DS so I can get you Chrono Trigger for it.
It has a slightly improved system and those awesome cutscenes from Akira Toriyama :D

You know I've never played the Chrono games I know they're rpg well I think anyway. Are they like the old ffs? Which would be the best to start or does it not matter?
