Apparently I come from a once influential family that helped various princes and nobles rise to power during the 1800's when Baden was united as a Grand Duchy.
And they were associated with many tribal conflicts in the area before the union. I'm assuming this is how they gained their power and influence. I'm too cheap to actually pay for more information though.
Kinda neat.

On some it is, not for all though. Some houses just used symbols they liked(there's thousands of lions!)
