well i'm sure it's certainly possible

i mean enough IE surfing, and neglect with regards to malware, defragging, etc. i think you could probably bring a cray to its knees

strangely enough, linux doesn't seem to suffer from that slow decline in performance that seems to affect windows boxes that haven't had a fromat/reinstall for years

Windows has to deal with a whole lot of bloat, especially after 8ish~ months of solid use.

yeah, i agree, bloat is the devil

i try to avoid bloatware when possible, but some of it is inevitable

i wonder exactly how it is that bloat would long term slow, a computer down, though, i should ask my little brother

Well I formatted about a week ago because of bloat on windows, and since the format my performance is way up. I tried turning on XI before the format and somehow I was lagging which was the deciding factor.

Bloat normally comes from programs that run in the background without you knowing or programs that spawn crap. For example I had a program that for every day for around 2 months made 6 text files full of pointless information about my PC specs.... at first it won't make much of a difference, but over time it really does.

Lack of defrags after lots of file installs/unistalls can cause bloat related slowdown too.

yeah, i try to format periodically as well. you know that annoying period, though, where you have to download the same 30ish basic programs that you basically need to function, firefox, adobe reader, flash etc?

i wish someone would make a script that would download/install those immediately post format

Just in terms of windows based problems and hardware installation mainly.

I did a course and got a distinction in microcomputer technology too. It was outdated and irrelevant.

My friend, I have a good website for you:

http://ninite.com/

I used this after my format and it saved me a ton of time.

my brother is majoring in some network security field, that is called industrial technology for some unknown reason

he says the instruction is terrible as well

our theory is that networking is a new enough subject that schools have yet to design a cogent curriculum and train appropriate teachers

That website will basically spawn you an installer.exe after you choose programs and then download, install and update all the programs you chose without you having to touch it. Really good to use immediately post format.

When I was in school I did a course in Cisco which is basically networking. It was really bad and helped nothing.

Got a high mark in it though which is kinda ironic seeing as I didn't revise at all.

With all my pointless qualifications I could quite easily get into university, but procrastination stops me doing so.

Ah yeah, it's really helpful :D Seeing as the intaller.exe is basically catered to whatever programs you choose on the list you could essentially use the same intaller for multiple machines without having to access the website either.

i think i could have done fairly well, but it was just so damned mind-numbing i decided to choose another career

i like the way it automatically says no to toolbars and extraneous crap!

having to go through the installation super carefully because companies try to sneak bloat onto your computer has often been a pet peeve

It was terrible, the CCNA exam was pretty easy though and seeing as people go "wow zomg cisco!" when they look at qualifications I guess that's good.

Boring as hell though, my friend went one qualification higher in it too.

Every other campus in my district is closed today except mine. The University posted a notice on Facebook explaining that we were still open, and almost instantly got over 50 replies of very angry people. Anything change? Of course not, since when do schools that we pay for have to listen to our opinions? >.>

Here's the conditions:
Over 6 inches of snow overnight (in addition to the several feet of snow we already had and more predicted)
Extremely slick, unsafe walking and driving conditions
Several people snowed into their homes
Most people unable to move their cars
Several accidents on Greek Row due to slippery conditions
At least 1 sprained wrist by 9am this morning from slippery conditions
Anyone living off-campus will have a very hard time getting to class
Anyone living on-campus will risk their tailbone getting to class

And what does the University say? "Snow happens here. We took all this into consideration. Campus is still open."

Well of course it snows here. But when coming to school means literally risking lives, it is NOT necessary to keep campus open! If professors would even give excused absences for difficulty getting to school, it would be ok. But nope, if campus is open and you can't make it, you get to take an absence penalty regardless of how dangerous getting to school would be for you. /sulk. imad. (a little.)

Some girls really are idiots. :-(. Not to mention that some girls are taught from a young age that they are more 'special' and 'delicate' than boys, so they expect boys to take the fall for them.

Example: Before my physics class, I usually hold the door open for the class that's leaving. Most of the boys look a little surprised and say thanks. Most of the girls say nothing. I think (this is of course completely unsubstantiated) that the boys say thanks because they are actually happy that someone is being nice to them and that the girls don't say thanks because they actually expect the door to be held open for them.
