Stay with Dune, it may be slow, but you will never regret reading it. It sticks in your mind for years.
Dune has many strong female leads, the Reverend Mother Mohiam, Chiani, and most importantly, the Lady Jessica.
Dang, now you've done it, I have to go read it again, twenty years later.. I guess Game of Thrones is on hold again.

The thing with Dune is you're going to hit a certain point where you don't realize you like it.
You're going to think "This is boring, when's it going to get good?" for awhile and then not realize that it's suddenly the most fascinating book you've read in your life because it's one of the best flowing books of the past 100 years or so.
