I just noticed this gen of pokemon, there's a lot of cute going on.

That's what made people rage. If the changes to Gen V weren't so great (for the game at least) then the sales would've been pretty meh.
Pokemon's badassness has always gone downhill since Gen I.

Do you think that's because the original gen was when we were kids(most of us?) and everything was awesome to us. Now we're older and can see them as blatantly cute?

It's painfully obvious that older Gens had more "badass" Pokemon.
In Gen I-II (maybe III), I'd walk into a gym and the leader would have all badass Pokemans ready to whoop my ***.

Starmie actually looked somewhat deadly. Dat gem. Not to mention you could actually easily guess types back then.
