I do want to point out. That raid I'm in is a Public group. I know none of those people. We just all teamed up to bring that beast down. That is one of my favorite aspects of Rift. Yes theirs Guilds, and Party's, Dungeons and Raid....but at some points it's just the entire population of the game teaming up to kill an invasion boss.

He did the quest to leave the noob zone. so he would have gotten a "Join public party" option when at the rift. all rifts give you an option to join a public group to team up.
