The first time NYYC ever lost, ending the longest winning streak in sports history at 132 years. And the rise of two counter culture movements in the stodgy linen-clad world of yachting. The Aussies came into our home and took what was most precious, and did it in straight up *** form (even as an American I loved seeing them do that to NYYC)- but then it created the monster Dennis Connor, and his audacity to say "maybe NYYC shouldn't be America's Team".
EDIT: This was the pinnacle of 12m Yacht class racing- this and 1987 in Perth. For many of us, its still our favorite class of sailboat used in The America's Cup, even with all the amazing tech we see now with the Foiling Monohulls I usually post pics of :)
