Surprised you haven’t heard this before. Fun fact: “mentally challenged” as late as ~50 years ago used to mean, “difficult mental task” so people would say “wow I was really mentally challenged on that provincial exam” with no other meaning, just like “physically challenged” back then.
But when the able-bodied majority society started focusing more on non able-bodied/minded inclusion, people tried to come up with more neutral adjectives to connotate ***.
