Trying to compare mtg/pokemon work the same as baseball is a lot off. The latter are literally just rl collectors items.
The others are not only games and people open packs of those for the same exact reasons people open lootboxes. Most the time all the entire contents pack will be worth MUCH MUCH less than MSRP even when buying in bulk with discounts. The hope is to get one of those chase cards to resell or to use to play because they playtest things out years in advance and know exactly which cards are likely to do well and put them at higher rarities. Not to mention they both also do digital and mtg it's full price and only gets you the online version

However, it's on the worst map in the game for snipers. So instead I took my Powered GM for a spin; turns out it's really fun.
