Josi! How are ya bro?
I guess I should play that before it's remade.

I actually put it down completely for nine months at one point, then picked it back up and happily played through to the end. Here's what you need to know: - Like XIII, the real game doesn't start until like ten hours in. - Vaan is not the main character. There's debate on who it is, but it isn't him. - The Gambit system is both awesome and annoying. Awesome because it's basically a simple programming minigame, and annoying because it takes control away from the player. Mostly it just made me want Gambits in XI. It's not the best FF game, but it's not the worst either. I find myself liking it a lot more in retrospect than I did at the time. The hunt/sidequest stuff in XII is far more fun than the story and (to me at least) it makes up for it

Once I treated it like an offline/single player MMO I had a lot more fun with it. Rooks, have you had the opportunity to try the FFXII Zodiac Job version? Takes some finagling with your Playstation but it's definitely an improvement to the gameplay. For one thing, the damage limit goes above 9999 so magic does much better. You can also adjust/turn off gambits for guests, and control guests and espers. They also redid many of the treasure chests, so you're sure to pick up useful items and stuff instead of 73 gil or a potion. Lastly, it has a Boss Rush kinda mode after beating the game, which unlocks Level 1 Hard Mode, which is crazy fun.

FFXII was actually the last console game I had any real time to spend on. It certainly seemed interesting, and I think if I'd liked XII's story more I might have looked into it, but a combination of busy/meh for XII pushed it far enough off the stack that I just never got around to it. Makes sense, I got my brother to handle all the setup (as a Christmas gift) so I could play it, cuz it seemed like a fair amount of know-how was involved.
As far as the story's weaknesses, I think they stem from two things. One is Vaan being an awful character who gets way too much focus (I wasn't crazy about his voice actor's performance either). The other is that the plot, in connection with the area designs, get lazier as the game progresses. Supposedly these are all issues that came from the creator (Matsuno, who also created Tactics and Vagrant Story) dropping out of the project. I had heard that originally, it would focus on Basch, and that Vaan was going to be more of a squire or whatever. To me, that would've made way more sense, with Vaan having more patriotic fervor than "I'm gonna be a sky pirate cuz I'm a dumb ***kid". It's too bad cuz I think Matsuno is one of the very few people in games with a talent for storytelling. I wasn't super crazy about Basch or Ashe either, but they were interesting, and would have been an upgrade. I'd play the hell out of "Balthier And Fran Are Awesome And Do Awesome Things For Sixty Hours Of Gameplay". |
