Correction, that's what they were named/translated by the 40ish chinese programers back in 1.0 when SE had to add on a bunch of coders to fix things. The actual linecode of Horsebird made it back into the official JP game and it pissed the fans off.
I think instead of the usual katakana name chokobo they used the kanji "uma" and "tori" (umatori) (horse and bird) to refer to them instead and it pissed the JP fans off

Ah, alright. Pretty funny if you played 1.0 though, might be a bit confusing for a 2.0 player.
Yeah it was a real salt into the wound sort of thing to a lot of people because 1.0 had such a bad rep, when that 'translation' of chocobo was found and traced back to SE hiring outside coders from china, everyone started referencing 1.0 as a chinese quality product.
