I went searching for a coffer while waiting for him to pop and fell down the wrong hole so now its either go through the past again to get to his pop point or get 3 other people to open the gate. >_>

They are there to make it more challenging, yes it's an annoying way of doing it but they gotta have something to prevent it being a straight run from A to B.
Also, I wouldn't admit using that if I were you.
I don't think needing x amount of people to stand on switches is challenging, it's just another time sink.

Oh well yeh those switches are just a pain in the backside. They were ok when the game was in its prime and there was always a few parties around to help, but things like that need altered now that there are much fewer players, sometimes none at all in the required zones.

If they did that I wouldn't use clipper to climb the 5 ft wall and skip out on a 10 minute journey lol.
I run most everywhere because I enjoy the scenery (Even after all these years) but timesinks like that are old hat and imo really unsightly in 2011.
I have nothing against the garbage shitadel doors, but I think it was a bit excessive to put coffers behind them. Especially now that the entire zone is almost always empty, they could have at least come up with a quest to allow you to open the doors solo.
