I've always held controller that way, though most people noticed it when I was playing shooters cause they could never figure out how I jumped/reloaded/turned all at the same time with little/no delay.
It's just a method of holding the controller/pressing buttons.

I can't press R1/R2 without my index and middle finger lol, I couldn't play that way

I usually rest my middle finger on R1/R2 depending on which one is used more often for the game I'm playing. If I absolutely need to use them both at the same time I'll rest my ring finger on R2.
Index finger will always either rest on Square/Triangle or Square/X unless it's a game where I need to either use Triangle/X more often or it's a game where I need to transfer between Circle/Square usage often in which case I rest across the Triangle/X buttons.

My thumb covers all 4 buttons so I don't need to use the 'claw'
