If You're A Guy, Why Do You Play As A Girl?

I saw an interesting thread on /v/ (lol 4chan) and I was curious as to why people chose to choose the opposite gender. AH normally has decent conversation before the trolling starts. Boredom I guess is the key reason though lol.

I couldn't think of a good male character name, so I played as a girl.

I think the better question to ask is: why would one NOT want to play as a F character in FFXI?

Seriously, what advantage is there to playing a M character, at all?

I'm not saying there's an advantage to playing an F character either.

My point is: it's a mostly arbitrary decision ... which could come down to something as fleeting and insignificant as what type of mood you were in on the day you created the character.

To me, it's not much different than deciding what shirt to wear, or what hat to wear ... or whether you wanna drive a pick-up truck or a sportscar.

I personally named my character after my pet cat. The name would have looked silly on a M character, I think.

i think there are more males playing female chars than females playing males.
i personally wouldnt wanna stare at a guy while i play - females are prettier and especially on mithras all gear sets look a lot better.
my 2nd choice would be a female taru, just because they look cute.
i also never chose male chars when playing beat em ups etc.

I alternate making male and female characters... the last character I made in any game before this one was a male so i went with female (not that i had much choice as mithra but would have got female regardless)


Not just SE, when ever i think back to any game book or movie i find that there are very few truely memerable male characters... male characters, especally as main characters, are just overdone imo..

I play as a female elvaan. My only reasoning for doing so was because in all honesty I usually prefer female characters in most rpgs I play. Yes, they are much nicer to look at. On a secondary not my main job is dnc and the female af/relic/af3 looks so much better.

I know alot of ppl do it to get free gil and gear from guys looking an MMO=GF but I have never ever said I was a girl to get anything. It has caused some really funny situations in the 2 years I've been playing though. :D

Gotta have something to stare at while you're just standing around.. XIV is the first time I've ever played a female character, but I didn't do it for any particular reason other than I hate elvaan and galkas, I spent my entire FFXI career as a taru (even when I quit and later started a new account, it was another taru) and humes are just too generic and plain.. So all I'm left with is mithra, if there was a male mithra, I would have chosen male.

Why would you want to stare at a guys *** all day if you can play as a female character?

Just play an Elvaan male if you didn't want to stare at a guy's ***, because they don't have one.

this is a question that has left me wondering a lot too.

i've never understood the 'stare at' excuse for choosing a female character. i think they say it just to dismiss the question. while i'm sure there are many reasons for playing a female, i think all of them are deeper than that. i also think that it's possible that the person who chose the female character isn't 100% consciously sure why.

one of my guesses is that men choose females because they're going to be investing a lot of time with the character. they'd rather invest that time/effort with a female rather than a male. if you think about it, you'll be Investing a lot time into something.... something that's almost like a some one. it's a strange form of intimacy if you think about it.

also maybe, it's because men like the idea of manipulating a woman. body/mind control type of experience. also, maybe men like the idea of actually becoming a woman. maybe it's a way to experience the fantasy of being the opposite gender for some.

my final guess has to do with the sex appeal topic. a lot of free mmorpgs advertise using sex appeal. i think that if someone gets into the game, they're getting into it to 'check out' the females. what better way to enjoy the sex appeal of the game than to just Make Your Ideal female through both character creation and through investing time in dressing it up or whatnot.

I heard guys play girls cuz they are perverts, and they would rather see a womans *** on their screen when running instead of a dudes. I also know girls that play male characters because they dont want every guy hitting on them :/ lol.

The way I see it, you're playing a fantasy based game, therefore one (I imagine) would play a fantasy like character, be it a character in their own likeness or something totally different for the sake of immersing yourself in something new, different, exciting.

This is the reason why I don't bother with Hume of any gender...

Awesome thread! I play male character because it was a very scary thought of creating a female character into a world full of guys. It's more natural that eye catches on to something moving, and usually those are round shapes (boobs, butts, crotch, ect.) Now all I wish is that elvaan male had an ***... And it was mentioned already: you aren't moving always, and the cruel fact that if you don't play in 1st person view, the character you play is in the goddamn middle of the screen, always, 24/7. So why not make it something you like to watch at instead of ignoring it most of the time. It's the character you're building up, dressing like a doll in a big dollhouse game. It would be weird to want toys but not look at them while you play. Oo;

i picked a mithra character to play simply to abuse the fact that so many people would ASSUME i was female without ever knowing for sure. in the early days of the game it worked out wonderfully with gifts and gil galore. but now its just the simple fact that i like my characters name so much. i named our cat after her :)

I'd rather look at a female's *** running than a male's ***.

started game as hume male. made mule mithra. and no it's not because she has to clean up my main-chars mess. was bored with blm and stuff and lvld thf but i didn't want to lvl with my main since he was blm only. Mithra came good for that.

actually if i could i would restart the game as taru just because the stats bring with it soo much.

little fun story: as Diablo 2 was about 1 year out i played in battle.net and had pretty awesome gear for a sorceres back then. i said i am a girl that plays this game. because i wanted the others really feel a pain when i killed them in a duel. pretty much it. screw the attention thing or cybersex.

and: i can life being inferior than a female player. my better half plays a shitton better quake 3 than i ever will. and i ranked place 1 at a recent local College-Lan-Party. well... cuz' she couldn't participate.

The ones i use are "/em throws his fake boobs at <t>" and i actually had some one argue with me wether i was male or female in RL (wtf right?) and i used "trust me its there just tucked away really good"

Well when you're moving around, the *** is on the damn screen and it's just right there.
