lol ps2 beats claim bots? good to know.

Oddly enough, this statement has some validity to it. We have a PS2 user and someone we KNOW who bots, and on many occasions, the PS2 user gets claim. Funny thing, they are brothers in the same room.

ps2 has been known to load things on the screen noticeably faster, bots have been known to be beaten by normal pc players, depends on the packet sniffer I guess.

How did you get to the screen displayed in your post? I assume its from PS config options but can I do it without any after market software/programs installed on my PS3?

PS2 Hacking tools :x

micro launch elf (uLE) (hacked to bypass partition security controls on official SONY game partitions) and that free MC boot thing that allows to boot unofficial software on a PS2 without physical mod-chip.

Basically an homebrewn program filebrowser which gives access to anything that's stored on the PS2 HDD lol.

I also ripped the three new songs they added on this update and made PSF2s out of them (google for PSF and PSF2)

why would you want IE on anything?
i guess for the same reason you would want to play ffxi on an outdated console

Yes. Youve obviously never played on a PS3, your argument is moot.

PS3 uses the same programming to load FFXI as the PS2. This problem has also affected PS3 users, like me, regardless of how much memory space avaliable.

Welcome to the conversation.

Again, if you arent part of the solution, youre part of the problem.

So... will I lose my macros on a clean install?
if they are not backed up on the FFXI server, yes, however it is possible to use the disc you got with the HDD to get a working filesystem on it after you have copied your old data, and formatted and reinstalled you can put your macros back on... i have no idea where they are stored or what file name. but if you did not back them up and are desperate, you can put the HDD in your computer and get them that way

Reinstall worked nicely for the PS3 and all the macros from the server loaded nicely.

Anyone trolling this forum instead of actually playing ffxi and looking for new NMs and wth drops twilight gear, go be useful and look for it! No one playing on the PS2 version cares what you think or say.

I'd like to point out that this game was designed for the ps2, and was released on the ps2 first (in Japan, where it was released first) and didn't come out on the pc for months...
Just food for thought.

As far as memory issues, the game is designed to work within a predetermined amount of space on the HDD; the game when first installed on the PS2 reserves about 8 GB if I recall. Most likely, what is happening is that the update is being downloaded into the remaining partition of this section, but is running out of room. Normally after the game finishes the install the old files are removed and there would still be space remaining for future updates.
So your HDD may show that it isn't full, but the space that is "pre-determined" for FFXI isn't enough capacity to do the temporary holding of new files prior to install.
SE should be able to patch this somehow.

sounds likely, either way it's a SE issue, not a user issue.

I'd like to add anyone saying stupid ***like this doesn't have the deductive reasoning to figure that the twilight gear most likely drops from the dragon NM which will be accessed after completing all of the 9 abyssea bosses.

You will never be useful on PS2 or even effectively use it if you managed to obtain such gear so go eat a bag of *** and keep being gimp.

"Yes I've played XI on my ps3, no I haven't tried to install the latest update onto my PS3. The title of the thread says death of ps2 players." - I hate quote trains.

YOU TARD!

So according to you, since its PS3, this problem shouldnt even exist... yet it does... hmm. So the "Full HDD" error message is just a fabricated figment of my imagination...

The only way PS3 users can even play FFXI is to install PS2 drivers from PSN and work from there! You claim you played on your PS3, but you must have forgotten you had to do this step 1st.

PS3 users ARE PS2 users!

@Dcon:

Man, sucks it didnt work for you, Im currently reinstalling and I noticed after the clean wipe that the PS3 only created a 12g partition for FFXI and I think thats where the issue is. SE is supposed to set the game parameters within those limits, its an utter failure on their part for exceeding it... if thats even the issue. IMO their "updates" should also consist of removing currently unused files too, rather that just writing over them to cancel effects.

same here

The fresh re install got me past the HD space message at the start of the download phase, however; this download is huge, but thats better than no more game.

Yeah download is huge, but I'm not going to be relieved until I can actually log in. Nothing stopping from download hitting 99% then stopping with an error.

You need at least 1.3GB free on the FFXI partition for the update to begin.
I'll tell you why it needs 1GB free to update 100 MB.

Every time it downloads a file that exists but was changed it does:
It downloads files from server saving it on the same folder as the older file but then it's named "filename.dat.tmp". On the "install" phase of the update the older file is deleted and the "filename.dat.tmp" (or ".tmp2") is renamed as the final file.
They changed the updater to troll people who were changing the dats on the PC (you know, edited gear and pre-marked maps) but they screwed up and the current updater is leaving a lot of orphan temp files within the PS2 partition lol.

Basically, it's simply "epic fail".

If you don't perform the "clean install" the old orphan temp files will never get deleted and there will be no free space for the update.

They mentioned that they will implement an new update mechanism in the future which will require less free space to work.

i have a question, i started the clean installation process already but so far im on the first disc the one that first installs Final Fantasy XI and Rize of the Zilart. Do i need to do this for every disc? (i.e. CoP, ToAU, WotG). after just the clean installation of 1st disc im trying the update and itstaking like 45 min to just "Prepare Update". its probably doing all the updates that got erased with the clean installation. i just wanted to know if i would need to do same for each disc before i wait this out and then it not work :/

Install *all* discs and then update on PlayOnline.
Do NOT install a disc then update to install another, you will end downloading the same update files multiple times.
