I got the same error on ps3. I just started the download again and it's loading for now. I'll post again to say what happens.

Edit: Tried again and after the first download phase I got the

Insufficient HDD space.
FINAL FANTASY XI
requires 1010MB of free space to update.

sigh...

last time the update crashed my game and I had to reinstall. This time is maybe even worse.

lame

Further Edit: 3rd try and I got the same thing. It downloaded the preperation but at the start of the main update phase the same message occured.

Done trying this for now.

Just tried to update this 3 times on an 80GB PS3 and getting the same error that i was getting on my PS2. Just a slightly different error message but still based on lack of space. PS2 error states 1010 while PS3 says 1G.

I'm getting the insufficient HDD space for 1010mb requirement required and I'm on a 80 gb PS3 with 50 GBs free. Annoying to say the least. PS3 had this issue with other games and it was solved by adding or deleting the size of the file from the HDD. Trying that now with a demo from the PSN store.

I have an 80gig PS3, however I also don't do much with it. So if the PS3 game partition is an expanding image i have plenty of space on the HDD.

I think everyone is missing the big picture... this game is like 9 year old. If you care enough about graphics or inventory or other limitations then the answer is simple... play a different game.

What do you mean? The 80 gig is the original with the hardware emulator built in. So, it plays FFXI without needing anything else.

No sense in playing on a different system. I have a ps3 and a computer but I prefer to play ffxi on my playstation2. Its the only thing on the harddrive so I am sure it will be fixed eventually. SE isnt going to trash what players they have. I know many people who still play on ps2.

ps3's can run ps2 games, not all versions. But can run them regardless.

Even if SE cut support for the PS2 version of XI, the odds of them rewriting the code for the game is ungodly low.

the 60gb and the 20gb were the 2 models at release (in US anyway)
the original 60gb model is the only ps3 that has the emotion engine in it(ps2 hardware), none of the others do, the first 20gb and 80gb have software emulators (didn't know xi worked on that crap) and the others have no support.

only 3 models can, and last I checked only the one with the emotion engine (ps2 cpu) could run xi, never really researched it though.

I'm pretty sure you can swap out the HDD in PS2's for a standard IDE one, that has more space.

Exactly, so this whole "SE needs to cut PS2" crap isn't going to happen.

3 models in the US. There are other countries!

I can't remember what my PS3 was originally, as I have since upgraded the HDD (which of course doesn't remove the emotion engine hardware).

Just added a 2kmb demo and ffxi stills says can't download the update to my ps3 because I don't have 1kmb free with 50GB free on the HDD....

Keep trying or is this going to be something they need to fix with a patch days later?

Last thing SE needs is to lose a another batch of the player base...

One major thing I miss about playing on the PS2. The awesome background vocals on the start-up screen. If it didn't mean investing in additional routers/cables/other ways to get around a giant cinderblock wall, I'd still be playing on it.

I'm having the same problem. Have 24k MB space on the HDD and it's telling me I don't have enough space to update. Currently I'm updating on PC. I play on both in case my nephews come over and want to use my PC. lol
