1. it's *** up that they won't fix a problem, and quite frankly I could forsee a class action suite for it

2. you can replace the lense and it may be able to read then, but some of the other suggestions you could probably try to grease the rods the lense rides on and that may help, or adjust the angle or power of the lense (use proper tools and a multimeter to make sure you're doing it right, and look for a guide if you're not sure or don't know exactly what setting is still safe when it comes to the adjusting the power)

3. that netbook will play xi, go ahead and make an image of the ffxi disc/discs (whatever you have for pc, I used 2008 collection when I put it on my friend's netbook) copy the image to your netbook via external hdd or over the network whatever is easier and use an image mounting tool (I used daemon tools) and you can install it like that (unless of course you have an external dvd reader or something, which is much easier)

also for some reason your link didn't state the cpu speed, according to what I read it's 1.6 ghz, if for some reason your video card doesn't support tnl, you have enough juice to emulate it with that cpu. (will run great if you don't have to emulate that, probably decent to not so well if you do have to emulate it, if you do I'd suggest maxing out the ram to 2gb)

you need the hdd utility disk?! sigh...i deleted everything and am tring to reinstall but its not working, if thats why then im screwed

You need the HDD if you did or trying to do the following:
1. Cleared your HDD and trying to reinstall. (By deleting FF through the HDD menu)
2. Moving your HDD from 1 PS2 to another PS2. (The reason is because PoL links the HDD to the PS2 it's currently using and being installed to and the only way to "unlink" the HDD to move to a new PS2 is by reformatting your HDD which can be done by using the Utility Disc)
3. Installing on a new HDD you need the Utility Disc to Link the HDD to the PS2 as well as the Adapter Disc. I did however read there is a chance you can connect to the internet without the Adapter disc by using an another online based game but I'm not sure how accurate that is.

---

Also; Please note that some of the first generation PS2's do not support the internet adapters. You can be getting an error because of this and it wont let you get into the internet or download anything to your HDD. If you run into this problem it's best to find a new PS2. I got mine from Gamestop, they were having a sale on Refurbished Fat PS2s. Also, they said to me that if it didn't work with the Adapter or HDD I could take it back and they'd replace it. Just make sure to let them know you want a PS2 that can run both items otherwise you can get screwed outta a PS2 that actually works.

Well, I went out around 1PM my time after setting up FFXI to download and update and came back at 12AM. The game was stuck at 90% preparing and was "frozen" there. So I decided to restart it before I went to bed. Around 1AM it moved to downloading documents with an 9 hour timer.

Went to bed and woke up.
Guess who's on FFXI now? :)

Hope everyone else can fix their problem. Such a pain in the ***.

after all this i'm half tempted to start repairing systems for people, i'll talk to a guy in my program at school and see if he wants to start doing it, i have the means to purchase the tools, and he has more practice at it than me, and he can mod systems too. /random thought.

Since there is no way to defrag our ps2, all the old files from emergency maintenances and constant updates (old files that are useless) are still on the ps2, and that's why this whole problem I think is happening. After I realized that and understood why we all are having problems, I wasn't as angry as before. A strange example I can think of would be, let's say they updated Ranger 5 million times, for different reasons (damage, distance, etc.) Instead of modifying certain files and doing a Save over the file, they make a 2nd file in place of the old one, so now you have like 2 or 3 files, and only 1 that is actually the final file used in gameplay.

I'm guessing SE calculated how much room we would need to play ffxi in general, but I don't think they calculated how many bad/old files we would not need/use would pile up in the future. Doing a clean install will delete all old files and start you on a fresh, clean slate of FFXI. I'm keeping in mind, that if they do more adjustments from this point, then yes, we will continue to build old/expired files over time, since there is no way to defrag.

This only applies if you do not have the 2008 collection disk, and are using 4 individual disks to reinstall RoZ, CoP, ToAU, WoTG. It took me about 24-30hrs worth of updating. Luckily I save all my macros on the server, so I was able to load my macros with no problem, after I deleted all user settings. Things are back to normal now. I hope this helps:

For those using your original hdd and not buying/using new hdd, you don't have to delete Playonline for this update problem. Only ffxi is affected, not playonline itself.

I simply turned on my ps2, went to the log-in screen, ran the ffxi/RoZ (the first original disk) and selected 'install' on the left menu. I accepted all the user terms and did a complete clean install without saving user settings. If you keep your settings, it does not do a wipe of old files, and you're basically copying/pasting over what you already have, and not deleting the old items. This will cause error messages about memory again, once you try to install one or more Expansions. (e.g. You maybe able to get CoP to install, but have memory problems with ToAU) Once again, YOU MUST DO A CLEAN INSTALL AND DELETE ALL USER SETTINGS. If you saved ur macros to the server, you can reload them later. If you did not know about this option/service before all this trouble happened, then unfortunately, you may be out of luck and have to redo your macros.

Saving macros instructions can be found here for future reference: http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Macros

After RoZ was installed (30mins), I tried to log in the game to play right away, and when you do that, instead of letting you play, there is an update. That took almost 10hrs to update.

After that update, I installed CoP from the playonline screen (30mins), and after that installed, I tried to log in the game to play right away again, and that too had it's own update. That took about 3hours.

After CoP, I did ToAU, playonline > install 30mins > log into game > do update (about 3hrs)

WoTG > playonline > install 30mins> log into game > update 3hrs

The last 6 expansion packs (the mini xpacs, and abyssea xpacs, if you purchased them) will highlight back up on their own, and require no updating.

What are my options?

I have the HD system with FFXI Pre-installed.

I have no disks to do a clean install with! That is assuming I can shred my PS2 and get it to read something, anyway.

Every console still has it's purpose. For example, 360 is an extremely convenient fire starter. I can't help but think how much easier camping would have been if I brought one with me.

Purposes.

Xbawkx 360: Fire starter! Console feel, free PC to use instead of using the old alt tab routine. Was safer back in the days when hacking was rampant right before the token.

PC: The best looking, best running, best preforming version of the game with helpful third party tools to make your life easier.

PS2: For the lulz and limitations as well as the ugliest most choppy lag piece of ***there is. Anything you want a PS2 for you can just play on the 360 and/or PC for.

Ok so, good news here to all you PS2 users who have a ps2 unable to read discs anymore. I've taken mine apart and located the problem. Basically, the laser eye that reads the discs is on a track, and it slides back and forth via a threaded pin to the right side of it, and the laser eye has a small white plastic piece that lays on top of threaded pin, and has 2 small plastic pieces underneath it that fit in the threads on the pin. Unfortunately after years of use, these small plastic pins have worn down considerably, and even remnants of them are stuck in the threads of the pin(cleaned out with a knife easily). What you need to do to fix this, is pop the 6 caps underneath your ps2, remove those 6 long screws, then flip over your ps2, lift off the top piece, which will still be attached to the main console with a small strip for power to the LED buttons(there will be a void sticker you have to remove in order to do this, i highly doubt your machine is still under warranty :P). Once you remove the top, and lay it next to the ps2, there are 4 tiny screws holding the cover to the CD compartment, you need a small eyeglass screwdriver, or i used a sharp knife, to remove these. Once that's off, and your ps2 is all opened up, turn it on, and open the cd tray with the button on the detached top piece, then turn the ps2 back off, you will then see the laser eye, and the plastic piece on the threaded pin/screw thing. I basically lightly squeezed these together, and cleaned out the bits of plastic stuck in the screw. Now just test if it worked by placing a cd in the tray, putting the cd compartment cover in place, and just holding it down with ur hand, turn the ps2 on and close the cd tray. If it reads, success! if not, open it back up, and re-attempt to get that plastic piece to connect better with the screw. Good luck! i'm currently reinstalling the game, and my console is reading the disk again just fine.

Used to use old PS2 myself for the game, would not read disks.

Another solution to the PS2 not reading disks/DVD that I did myself and worked countless times is re-applying lubrification to the metal bars that the laser eye slides back and forth on. WD-40, vaseline, or any industrial lubricant works. I'd have to do it every 3 months or so but it would even read DVDs again lol.

Hope that helps.

Thanks guys! ROFL I never thought the old girl's be able to see again and it was just a FFXI box for the longest time LOL! Thanks to the orriginal post by Aeil, I got the nerve to take her apart. Cleaning the screw alone didn't solve it. In total I did 4 things. Clean the screw, clean the metal poles the lense rides on, clean the lense, and adjust the angle the disc is read at. For those of you who don't know, there's a little white sprocket by the lense that adjusts the angle the disc is read at. You can adjust it w/ an allen wrench.

After about a full 360 degree turn, the pannel drops back down and starts over. If you want to try this, mark the position with a fine tip pen, so you know where it started. Turn it 4 clicks, and try running a disc. Keep repeating the process till ya get it.

Any other PS2 owners who want to try this out, best of luck! And for the record, I had to clean the screw a few times to get it to read gold discs right. Started reading CDs and DVDs first. GOOD LUCK!

-Installing now! Thanks again!

I must say that I was trying to be patient and wait for SE to fix the problem, but seeing that they didn't for a whole 7 days since the update, but also our ps2 no longer read discs for a while.
We did the above method for our PS2 that doesn't read any of our discs anymore, the one thing we did to get it working was adjusting the white sprocket and it read discs again. Even though it may not read discs at times when I just close the tray, it will start to read after closing a few times and I uninstalled FFXI files off my HDD and used my PS2 vana collection 2008. I successfully downloaded all the files and it's now on step 3 installing them. There were 12369 files to be downloaded after using the Vana collection 2008 and the number files that are being installed are 25981 as of this time ( 12/13/2010). hopefully i'll be online in the next 20 minutes.
the disc installation and file download took 7.5+ hrs together.

Thank you guys very much, my PS2 can play other games yay :D

Sorry if this has already been covered in here, but the trolling trolls make it hard to find helpful information.

I believe my situation has not been covered, and I'm wondering if anyone else has the same problem as I do.

I have a PS2 and I bought FFXI w/HardDrive back in 2004 or so. I bought CoP, ToAU and for the last installement I bought the Vana'diel Collection 2008 which included WotG.

I had the problem many of you had with the space problem on the HardDrive, and to top it off, the disc drive doesn't work either (surprise suprise) for me to do a clean install. So I got my friends's old PS2 which the disc drive is still functional. I took my HardDrive out out my PS2, and installed it into his.

Now I'm trying to make a clean install and the PS2 won't connect to the internet. What I'm I missing? Can someone help me out?

you have to install ffxi on the system you will play it on, basically replace your ps2 or get your disc drive to work. dnas (iirc) prevents it from going online etc.
