After clean install I successfully updated.

Visions and Scars of Abyssea don't light up as being registered now on the screen previous to character select. How do I get them back?

I BELIEVE that you need RoZ, CoP and WoG installed and registered for all of the the Abyssea expansions to work.

To have all add on scenarios (all 6) working you need to have all disc based expansions :\

Well I think us PS2 users that have been waiting for a better solution are gonna have to bite the bullet. This is what SE emailed me after I asked them if they were still looking for a solution or if the re-install was their final answer.

Dear Customer,

Regarding your request for technical support. Please find your answer below.

We do apologize for the inconvenience but currently the current resolution to the issue you are receiving is to uninstall and reinstall the game. Further instructions can be located at: http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/polnews/news20166.shtml. If there will be other resolutions to the issue, we will post them on our official website: http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/

Thank you for contacting the SQUARE ENIX Support Center.

/sigh... Adios my dear macros and markers...

Ok so, good news here to all you PS2 users who have a ps2 unable to read discs anymore. I've taken mine apart and located the problem. Basically, the laser eye that reads the discs is on a track, and it slides back and forth via a threaded pin to the right side of it, and the laser eye has a small white plastic piece that lays on top of threaded pin, and has 2 small plastic pieces underneath it that fit in the threads on the pin. Unfortunately after years of use, these small plastic pins have worn down considerably, and even remnants of them are stuck in the threads of the pin(cleaned out with a knife easily). What you need to do to fix this, is pop the 6 caps underneath your ps2, remove those 6 long screws, then flip over your ps2, lift off the top piece, which will still be attached to the main console with a small strip for power to the LED buttons(there will be a void sticker you have to remove in order to do this, i highly doubt your machine is still under warranty :P). Once you remove the top, and lay it next to the ps2, there are 4 tiny screws holding the cover to the CD compartment, you need a small eyeglass screwdriver, or i used a sharp knife, to remove these. Once that's off, and your ps2 is all opened up, turn it on, and open the cd tray with the button on the detached top piece, then turn the ps2 back off, you will then see the laser eye, and the plastic piece on the threaded pin/screw thing. I basically lightly squeezed these together, and cleaned out the bits of plastic stuck in the screw. Now just test if it worked by placing a cd in the tray, putting the cd compartment cover in place, and just holding it down with ur hand, turn the ps2 on and close the cd tray. If it reads, success! if not, open it back up, and re-attempt to get that plastic piece to connect better with the screw. Good luck! i'm currently reinstalling the game, and my console is reading the disk again just fine.

Used to use old PS2 myself for the game, would not read disks.

Another solution to the PS2 not reading disks/DVD that I did myself and worked countless times is re-applying lubrification to the metal bars that the laser eye slides back and forth on. WD-40, vaseline, or any industrial lubricant works. I'd have to do it every 3 months or so but it would even read DVDs again lol.

Hope that helps.

I emailed them asking how they're gonna address the issue with those that CAN'T reinstall due to old PS2s not reading etc. I got the same exact automated response.

"Please preform a clean reinstall"

Ohthx, I mean I can totally do that on my "perfectly" working PS2 amirite? Once again useless.

I took my PS2 apart, doesnt seem to help anything. Still not reading a damn thing. /sigh Looks like ima have to buy a new console cause SE blows.

In the future macros/system settings can be saved to the server and then later retrieved from any system.
Click here for information on how to do this.

Yes that's the whole point here.

I have three PS2 with FFXI in them. Two are japanese and one are american.

The American one was up and playing the game in a similar time as what you reported. I never installed the discs on it. It came with the pre-install from 2004 when they first sold the harddrive in the USA.

The two japanese consoles had issues but of course there were no HDD sold with FFXI pre-loaded in it for Japan. Meaning that both japanese PS2s have the game installed from the discs.

This is the first time I am happy for not formatting the US PS2 HDD on the few times I thought I needed to. I suppose that this issue affected all JPN and some NA PS2 players (judging by my results here).

Is there any NA player reading this who has it installed on a PS3 and had NO issue ?

Thanks guys! ROFL I never thought the old girl's be able to see again and it was just a FFXI box for the longest time LOL! Thanks to the orriginal post by Aeil, I got the nerve to take her apart. Cleaning the screw alone didn't solve it. In total I did 4 things. Clean the screw, clean the metal poles the lense rides on, clean the lense, and adjust the angle the disc is read at. For those of you who don't know, there's a little white sprocket by the lense that adjusts the angle the disc is read at. You can adjust it w/ an allen wrench.

After about a full 360 degree turn, the pannel drops back down and starts over. If you want to try this, mark the position with a fine tip pen, so you know where it started. Turn it 4 clicks, and try running a disc. Keep repeating the process till ya get it.

Any other PS2 owners who want to try this out, best of luck! And for the record, I had to clean the screw a few times to get it to read gold discs right. Started reading CDs and DVDs first. GOOD LUCK!

-Installing now! Thanks again!

It does include all add-on scenarios, even if you didn't pay for them. (if you didn't pay you won't be able to use them, though.)

So, I was able to buy a new PS2. Come to find out, wooosh. SE is total win of course. You need the HDD Utility Disc to wipe the entire thing and start fresh since POL links to whatever PS2 you install to. Thankfully after hours of searching I finally found all the discs including the Utility Disc (It's important to have this because well... you can't rebuy it anywhere) I need to reformat and... now to test that out and reinstall.

Got a nice 40 dollar deal on a newly working PS2 sooo beats the hell outta buying a 360 or new computer to replace it.
