I recently picked up FFXI again (after around 6months and not enjoying ffxiv at all), and i am still TECHNICALLY a newer player. I think my gear is pretty up-to-snuff overall, and i just got to lv66 on Samurai. I decide to fight maat and see how it goes. i get wrecked. my strategy was as such:
IT didnt end as planned(TE only lasted 1 ws, and i missed my first gekko) if you are wondering about my gear (another point of advice i could use) here it is:
Daihannya
Mythril Grip +1
Haubergeon
Sipahi Turban
O. Kote
Sarutobi Kyahan
Spike Necklace
Spike Earring x2
Headlong Belt
Garralous Ring (or w/e)
Courage Ring
I see a lot of people using Zanbato for the fight, is it better than daihannya? please share experiences, strategies, equipment/strategic advice. Thanks v(^.^)
Keep at it. MIssing your WS will get you killed in Sam Maat fight I remember living with like 10% hp left and I was basically spamming WS's like a madmen
SAM was a little luck for me too, but I didn't have Capped GK and since my DRG was 75 at the time i ended up using Polearm.
Ran in and Meditated to 200%, Sekka > Penta > Penta > 2hour > penta > penta and he was dead.
At the time i even forgot i was still medicated from a Wing from my last Maat fight (was spamming them for Cap) and couldn't use my potions lol.
Either way, I suggest polearm to most SAMs looking for advice if you have it capped, 1-hit Weaponskills, despite 95% Accuracy, are just a gamble sometimes in these fights, because its literally all or nothing, where as Penta is 5 hits, pretty powerful, and will usually always do some kind of damage.
So if you're losing because of bad luck whiffing WS, you can keep trying, or i recommend attempting it with polearm if you have it capped.
Either way, good luck =x, Seems like you maybe just get unlucky.
Edit: And not to come off as a D-bag, Invest in a little better armor, maybe farm before trying again. At the very least a Chiv Chain and maybe some nicer rings. Either way, I hope you win soon.
When I did SAM Maat I was SAM66 and my GKT skill was uncapped at 200? Whatever NIN75 caps at. I didn't have Gekko. I basically geared up full STR gear with Sole Sushi and had Vile Elixir/+1 on macro for just in case.
Opo-opo, + Meditate. Wait for mediate cooldown
Seigan
Third Eye
Sekkanoki
Tachi: Yukikaze
Meditate
Tachi: Yukikaze
Tachi: Yukikaze <-- Should be ready from meditate
Meikyo Shisui
Tachi: Yukikaze
Tachi: Yukikaze <-- Won on this WS
Tachi: Yukikaze <-- Extra from 2hr, didn't need
Yes there are way better methods using skillchains. This is how I did it because I didn't want to ungimp myself and get Gekko for the fight.

My GK is capped, and based on my luck last night, i wasnt all that suprised about missing that ws (missed 3 gekks in a row on a goblin at cape teriggan), and as i i said earlier this is my first job to this level, so my PA isnt capped. and I said my gear was pretty up-to-snuff but not perfect (was 1am when i posted this, forgot amemet mantle +1, and Ecphoria Ring), don't worry ur not a d-bag :D
It doesn't hurt to throw in Skill Chain Damage. Figure out some good skill chain's to do and you should def. win. Usually Yukki and Gekko and Gekko again is the best way to go if you dont have Kasha.
Shoot me down for this but if you don't have Kasha, wouldn't it be best to just spam Yukikaze? Same modifiers as Gekko but Yuki inflicts blindness while Gekko inflicts silence, one is clearly more beneficial to have on Maat than the other.
Seigan over Hasso period, or else you're just begging to make the fight infinitely more harder than what it has to ever be, regardless of if you try it at sixty-six or seventy.
Yukikaze, Gekko (fragmentation) and another Gekko (distortion) with even merely a yellow curry bun will down him, guaranteed (though you'll have two weapon skills left over if you wait until 300% TP to engage).

You're basically fulltime WSing, which renders the haste irrelevant... You're using one-hit weaponskills, which renders the accuracy irrelevant. That leaves 9 STR, or ~15 damage per WS. Is 80 damage really the difference between a win and a fail here? Even if it is, I'd argue for the safety factor of Seigan and just get a melee swing off after those 5 WS to finish the geezer off.
This was before seigan/hasso, so I used a blink band. Today I would probably blink band + hasso anyway, just to get it over faster. I opened with a demon arrow for the atk-, nothing else I did was especially interesting. I didn't sleep for TP, and my gear was nothing amazing.
You are actually asking for help with the SAM maat fight? That may be the easiest G5 ever made.
WHM is pretty easy. Stand there and cure until...
You just don't stop curing.
Or even easier, cap Divine and just Repose him.
Although I do wanna try meleeing him down. But I think you win after 5 minutes of engaging him regardless, and with Benediction I doubt I could win that way :s
I bested Maat a second time as WHM75 melee style. This was back when I used to play WHM a lot. Won first try and got a little overly excited when I won ;) I was geared pretty gimp even by 2007 standards for a melee WHM. I screwed up trying to cast during the fight and got interrupted a lot.
2nd try: Maat Victory, thank you all, your imput was much appreciated. used the same strategy and beat him in 3 WS's didnt even need to use icarus wing or pots
