It's sort of a combination of what Ninaa is saying and what Flion was saying about inside jokes.
Bass players are perceived as lazy and dumb. The inside joke among bass players is that what others perceive as "lazy and dumb" is really all an act.
We let the singers and guitar players do all the work while we sit back and enjoy the ride--all the fun, none of the pressure, and somehow we still do pretty well with the ladies.
Most bass players I know don't even like the kind of music their bands play. They just hop in, play along, and reap the benefits. In order to keep the ruse alive, we feign lazy and dumb so no one knows we are actually capable musicians. =P
