Massively popular aggregator site reddit.com was recently chastised by its parent corporation for accepting 3rd party ads in support of California Proposition 19, the November ballot initiative to completely legalize marijuana in the state. (Which polls show currently in favor by anywhere from 10 to 20 percent.)

The conservative parent corporation, in a drizzle of PR mumbo-jumbo, said that it "does not want to benefit financially from this particular issue."

So Reddit has responded by simply running all the Yes on 19 ads for free.

Whoops.

I wonder if it become legal....
How that may affect the programs that have a policy in affect in the means of
"Even if you have proper documentation - you will not receive any benefits if you test positive."

Or how this would affect the state on a federal level.

I would guess (not sure though) that any individual corporation and/or similar entity can decide to withhold benefits if you are under the influence of weed. There are companies that have a zero tolerance policy for good reason, and I would assume this would hold strong. ie: I work for a medic company and they have a strict zero tolerance policy, meaning even if under physicians order you come to work under the influence of any narcotic that you are automatically terminated and lose your license. Strict, but within the legal guidelines. great questions to think about though.

I would like to take it a step further, and say if it becomes legal, what are people's thoughts on welfare recipients being mandated to undergo drug testing as part of the requirements to be on assistance?

Prop 19 effectively puts marijuana under exactly the same laws as alcohol.

Production is regulated, sales are regulated and taxed, you must be of legal age, no public intoxication, no driving under the influence, and corporations can have whatever internal policies they choose.

I didn't post it for the political debate side of the story, but rather for the hilarious "Oh, snap!" aspect of Reddit's response.

But people make their own alcohol. Would people be allowed to grow their own Marijuana?

Not legally, and not without a license and taxes.

No, both are as illegal. Growing/making them that is.
