AI in this game is very weak and don't use team tactics. I know someone who played only bots game until level 21.
He couldn't do anything at all against players people of his level, the difference is just that big.
What I will recommend you is the same I did for my friend, play bot games until you are feeling like playing something more challenging, then make a new account and do PVP only from level 1.

Been buying these items when I play her:
Bloodthirster
Phantom Dancer
Black Cleaver
(Not exactly in this order)
Works well for me, can mow down large groups of minions with 1 Make It Rain very quickly, which = faster gold. Champs go down fairly easily, depending on their level.
Any suggestions for improvements?

Pretty standard for an AD carry. You may want to look into an Infinity Edge, and Triforce if MF benefits from the Sheen bonus.
Missing LoL like no other when I'm at college. The internet here is so crappy so I can only do bot games till I come back for the weekends. Usually I play Morgana and some friends tell me to get Lux since Morg is usually banned and they're about the same. I'm still iffy since I can see their snares are the same but then I forgot I had this screenie of a friend on Lux and made me consider her more.

my standard MF build is my standard non-triforce ranged AD page, IE and BT with some PD and LW normally work well enough without the on-hit

after one BF sword item, get a phantom dancer so you can kite, then get the other bf sword item you didnt get.
next get either guardian angel for bruisers with cap closers who give you issues, banshees for those long range CCs like ashe arrow or instagib stuns like taric, or QSS for something like a nunu spammable slow.
lastly finish up with a last whisper and a second phantom dancer
MF takes a decent amount of skill to win lanes against some of the more popular carries like graves or cait. GL and happy playing.

only a few mages i can think of that use cooldown shoes over pen, like vladamir and nidalee off the top of my head, some of their staple moves need to be lowered in order to get the most efficient use out of them.
you dont really need CDR boots on vlad...

i never rush BT over IE on cait and do fine
well i never rush BT over IE on almost anyone who i get both on and do perfectly fine

as for vlad, the more transfusions he can get off in lane, the longer he can stay there, consider it like haste in XI, being able to cast more spells every few seconds compared to doing like 20-30 more damage a hit isnt really going to compare over time.

not even that, i just normally play well enough where sustain isnt a problem on vlad
or is schatzie also going to argue heal is a good spell on vlad due to the fact that it stacks with his other abilities
also by the logic that cdr is like haste is like saying attack speed is like haste

more sustain = more farming if and only if the extra sustain is necessary
if you're playing vlad you shouldn't need the extra sustain
also i never said farming didn't win games, so i don't know why you're shitting that out
