If a crappy team is smart enough at least, this will make them even feel shittier about themselves.
Imagine a team who can easily score goals on another, gets ahead by 4, effectively moves to the side while the other team scores a few, and then goes back to pummeling them.
The losing team will know they are being *** with and will be pretty pissed off.

when i used to play soccer and my team started to lose i would just play harder

Even if a team is getting creamed in professional leagues the best the other team can do is admit defeat, keep playing, and try and narrow the score gap as much as possible.
Besides, depending on when the stretch ahead is made, you can take advantage of the winning team taking their score for granted. I've seen incredible come backs before because the winning team simply assumed they were fine with such a huge lead.
