I can understand not wanting to be put in a position where you feel obligated to give something back, but in all honesty most gifts are given without expectations. I find it rude and almost downright insulting to outright refuse a thought out and paid for gift, regardless of time or purpose.
But I guess I'm weird... I also don't like to accept gifts. I much rather give and bring joy unto others than be the recipient.
