"large number" of ps2 subs? is it still big in japan? Apparently, Japan got Seekers on PS2, literally days before Sony completely discontinued all service and support with the system.
EDIT: Also, dropping PS2 wouldn't be that big of a deal, My PS2 started going out so I couldn't play on PS2 anymore, I didn't just quit, I bought a laptop. Anyone who really loves playing the game will still play regardless, just like everyone who moved to PC in NA and EU.
I honestly don't know how people can play on PS2. You can't see 5 feet in front of you even with the best possible connection (which is component video I assume). But at the same time, I understand that it's the only way some players can enjoy the game. I bought an off-the-shelf laptop and XI played MUCH better on it than on PS2.
PS2 has no internet browser. You're probably asking yourself "WTF does that have to do with anything?!" Well, these people who would complain on the OFs about them dropping PS2 are more than likely doing so on a PC. A PC that can run FFXI.

I think my smart phone could run FFXI and it is slow as hell.

They probably banned every NA that posted. I hear they get kinda ban-crazy with dissenters over there.

Massive server merges. Also I hope they smooth the game up, meaning- less loading between zones, separate zones by adding more severs, So You enter Batalia downs and maybe there are 5 different batalia downs to enter.
Add ps3/4 version, redo the graphics ( hence less loading between zones etc. ) game is much faster then the 75 days but still feels slow sometimes.

Black screen on PS2 is a anecdote amongst JP players too.
I don't think people will feel too bad about PS2 being dropped at this point.
And no I don't think web cafes renting PS2s for playing FFXI is feasible as the hardware is nearly impossible to replace even in Japan. lol

They straight-up told us that if we wanted more inventory load times would be longer, and we said okay. They gave us more inventory, load times are longer.

That's the infrastructure we're working with. Apparently your character, equipment, levels, inventory, etc. has to load every time you zone in XI.
