@Kat: I lol'd reading that, it's so true. lol I don't want to sound mean or anything, but I'm much more apt to be super *** annoyed by a bad female singer than a bad male. That isn't to say some males can truly give them a run for their money, but in some of those cases it's because they sound like a bad female vocalist. haha

I think, its just that rock music has a masculine sound to it, just in the instrumentals alone. Its just the fact that a woman has to sound hard, to fit in to rock music. As country/pop/R+B have a more, somber, or an upbeat note. Women can sing that, and its great.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned the best female rock vocalist of all time (unless i missed it) the one & only Janis Joplin.

Maybe I'm in the right genre (or wrong depending on the listener) but Arch Enemy, Iwrestledabearonce and Kitty all have female vocalists. As does Nightwish and Lacuna Coil. Granted, they're rock/metal bands, but still...

Nightwish and Within Temptation are good female vocalist bands that have been mentioned and mostly Autumn is another great band they have both male and female vocalists so you get a little of both in some songs or just male or female in other songs.
Think someone mentioned them but Halestorm is amazing.

There's other decent female vocalists, I don't just listen to one "genre," so I find them in various types of songs. The singer from Portishead isn't half-bad, either.

Some female vocalists are great, but bands like Flyleaf and Paramore give me a headache. I don't think high pitched vocals mesh well with rock. Just my opinion.
