Say what you want about the development team, they are masters of optimizing memory usage, if they've managed to keep FFXI Updated this long even while supporting the PS2 version.
The current theory on this new item set(s) is that it's only 3 sets, with options to customize them to your desired build. Not unlike the Augmented items from the Micro Expansions. I am personally hoping that there is a new endgame event zone (Atomos' Realm) that they have been hinting at.

The update is a lot bigger than I was expecting by the looks of it, as for the armour, it's really hard to say exactly how many sets there are because of the customisable aspect of it.

While I thought most of the weapons looked... kinda creepy, the sword is just badarse.

Doubt its a WotG reward. My only, somewhat stretched logic to this is theyre updating the quest lines in novmeber, where as fancier bits of gear, Atamos making a guest appearance etc will probably come with later missions.
Probably new endgame mode. Or worse yet, MMM, in which case, "Gee, thanks SE..." /decline

Wow, some of that gear looks pretty gnarly. Although, I'm afraid to say it also looks very reminiscent of the gear from WoW, complete with massive shoulders :(

sam is straight tanking if used to,but no kiter!
check dmg reduction gear(mag and phys - there is a lot available for sam)
+ fast cast/haste parrying gear while utsu, combine with seigan+third eye
have at least ur af1+1 hands equiped(+more available) and use t. rice balls. there u go as straight tank,if u just want to get from A to B and want the movement speed,ok.thats another point,but not for sam kiting ...

The weapons look more like theyll be mob useable
its not that sam couldnt or isnt a good kiter, just no movement speed gear for it. and no, movement+8 aint gonna cut it, hell +12 sometimes doesnt even cut it >o
