Is there a way to abbreviate a character name in a send command?
No, but @others and @all will work.
Can use alias, maybe? For example using a alias /name to /console send name can do the trick.
Didn't the Shortcuts plugin do this? Like you could type //c5 snpr, and it would cast Cure V on Snprphnx?
Yes, you would have to make an alias in the init.txt such as:
alias sm1 send mulename1
Usage: //sm1 c5 maincharname
You can also do this with jobs:
alias geo send @geo
Usage: //geo fullcircle
Or @all and @others:
alias sa send @all
alias so send @others
Usage: //sa command or //so command
alias sm1 send mulename1
