Oh god, we're really getting granular here huh? Jeez...

To me, it's all subjective to the player. MMOs have goals that are different from linearly-progressed games. As long as you've completed your goals before the day when you finally say "I'm done for good", you've 'beaten the game'. If you end up leaving before you finish what you really would have liked to accomplish, you'll always feel like you left something on the table.

A casual player may be happy just getting some missions and NMs beaten/checked off their list. They may be happy just making 1 REMA, and by the time they move on, they've essentially 'beaten the game'. To a player with more lofty goals of character progression and in-depth completion, they won't fully feel accomplished until every single sliver of content, quest, mission, and item is checked off of their list before the curtain closes.

tldr - all relative to who you are and what your goals are. Player A can't tell Player B whether he's 'beaten the game' because each player is an individual and has their own MMO goals. Many players have beaten the game and moved on. Many are still reaching that point. And some will never reach it if they keep adding more goals for themselves.

I mean like you could go on and on and on into subcategories. It's really a semantics game, and you can never win that.

You can "finish" the game.
You can "beat" the game.
You can "complete" the game.

These all have different definitions.

Every category will have an asterisk. If they add something new after you say you're done, you became "not done".

Ex; I "beat" the game *when it mattered (before RoV) and then "finished" the game @ completion of RoV

FFXI is like any other drug, and the first step to beating it is admitting you have an addiction.

(MMO's by nature aren't meant to be beaten; even after you've capped/killed everything/seen end credits you'll still log on just to help and socialize with others.)

Did you have a job to 75 before the first EXP cut???
Nothing in the game today is as much of a grind as 50-75 before the first cut.
(how many current players can even tell you what "moon" is?)

Did you experience Gobby Trains in Dunes?
Crawler Trains in CN?
or bat/beetle trains in grabmeshitifell?

Everyone has their own definition of completion for MMOs... but personally, if someone told me they beat the game and never experienced those things....i'd call them full of S#!t.

As far as SE is concerned, they gave you the end of all endings EVER, but.... here is some extra ***you can do. It's like a burger, but each month it's from a different place. So, name 12 different fast food burger places. December seems like McDonald's, and Dynamis is the bacon. Wait.... does McDonald's put bacon on burgers? Anyway, I beat the game, and I only eat tacos now.

lol remember doing level cap in that yagudo place? I used my 75 BST to escort you and your group back in like 2006 or something. Good times! Our server was packed back then wasn't it? Every time I escorted people through those dumb quest it felt like beating the game a little xD

I considered FFXI completed when I beat RoV.

I covered all the major story content and a lot of side content; participated in endgame. Leveled jobs the traditional way (before ez mode).

I dabbled in ballista. I did skill up parties. I remember old school Ohat runs, etc.

I experienced as much as I wanted to out of this game before I finally set it down. Not sure if I can say I'd do it again, but I definitely wouldn't take the time back. Was worth every second.

I've been back to anime and conventional gaming. I don't think I could seriously play another MMO ever again.

some of these definitions of beating the game are pretty hilarious. analogous situations include:

you haven't beat FFXII until you've suffered the tedium of taking down Yiazmat, a fight SO tedious, that it makes XPing in the old days of FFXI seem like the most exciting thing ever.

no one has "beaten" Digital Devil Saga until they New Game + (clearing the game the first time doesn't count!) and beaten Demi-Fiend.

no one has "beaten" Final Fantasy 1 unless they have gone through with every single possible party combination!

most people consider "beating a game" to mean played from the start to clearing the final boss and seeing the end credits. most people seem to be describing a "100% completion" run, which is an entirely different beast. neither of these definitions truly fit FFXI because an MMORPG is ephemeral by design. the closest thing to a "final boss" would be the Cloud of Darkness from RoV since that pops the credits scroll. since there's usually something new, even if it's just an Ambuscade fight, most every month, 100% completion won't ever occur, let alone the earliest limited time holiday events that never repeated.

in the end, did you complete FFXI's primary story content (Missions/Expansions culminating in RoV)? it's probably safe to say that by normal, offline standards you've "beaten" FFXI. anything beyond that is moot and/or just e-peen waggling anyways.

In Final Fantasy tradition, simply following the story from start to finish is all that it should take to beat the game.

Side quests, super bosses, and sometimes even a bit of post-game content are nice and can be meaty at points, but they exist for certain types of players and have no bearing on the regular game besides providing rewards that make the main journey that much easier. Lunar Trials from the FF4 GBA / PSP updates are great since players can obtain super weapons and fight harder variants of bosses, while having some story slapped on and setting up an optional super boss that's a reskin of a final boss. In XI, we'd just call this Dynamis.

Just play the story and enjoy the fact that over the course of 12 years, your character went from background to supporting and ultimately lead role, while bringing peace and finality to the realm. The fact that RoV wraps things up nice and neat for the game is such a big deal compared to how SE could have just pulled the plug and blamed it on dwindling subscriber counts, like other MMOs have done in the past. XI has a clear start when they introduce your nation and your character upon creation, and has a clear finish with RoV's plotline, so that's clearly how one beats this game.

Now, if you wanna go "The Completionist" on about 15 years worth of content, feel free to hate yourself and your free time by utilizing any definition of what one feels it takes to "complete" the game.

If anyone in FFXI plays with 3rd party tools to assist with game play and feels like they beat the game.... they didn't even play the game. Ok, maybe they do play the game, but hmmm, it's kinda like this:

YouTube Video Placeholder

I say "kinda" like it because some of you 3rd party tool users go as far as to use game genie tactics which break the physics of the game entirely.

You beat the game when you defeat Bosses using the least amount of people in the worst possible gear and somehow still defeat the Badass NMs. I've always held the utmost respect and admiration for individuals, linkshells and parties that manage to get the win utilizing LOL gear.

Tecmo Super Bowl was and still is the best sports game ever.

If someone claimed they beat FFVII, would you assume they'd killed Emerald & Ruby Weapons, and had all their characters Lv99 with their ultimate weapon?

In my opinion, finishing RoV is beating the game.

If you say you beat 7 w/o emerald and ruby, then you're wrong.

Winning includes "final" boss and harder than final boss boss(es). Items/Levels are irrelevant.

I consider a game beaten as soon as I see the credit rolling. Same as watching a film.

Issue is, I know tons of players that don't use 3rd party tools that play almost as good as those that do. It doesn't give you a huge advantage, it's a quality of life improvement in 99% of cases.

If you are noticing such a huge difference between them and you, it's probably just that you aren't as good as you thought you were.

Case in point, I know a player (who for community guideline reasons I won't mention by name unless I get their permission... I'll ask) that plays all their jobs on the vanilla client and I didn't even know until a few weeks ago, because I just always assumed the used Windower.

The thing is, if you think you can light up a bowl, get high as all ****, then still hang with the best of them, playing part time and putting zero dedication in the job, you're just being asinine. This is an MMO, and there will ALWAYS be someone putting more into it than you are willing to, and bitching and moaning about it and calling (at this point) pretty much everyone cheaters is unproductive, and somewhat childish to boot.

ok, in my ls we got talking and this came up.
"what does it take so say you beaten ffxi?"
When I got the interview for my job at SE back in the days, they asked me what could tell them how hardcore of a FFXI player I was. I looked at the senior manager and said "well, I got a D ring within a few months in a JP LS, among other things".

The senior manager looked at the other manager and said "does that speak to you? is it anything noteworthy?" and he answered "he pretty much beat the game".

15 min later, I was hired, my first job ever. Seeing what I went through for this D ring and what it yielded, that will be my "I beat FFXI".

I keep hearing people said you'd be "drastically better" with GS as a DD because equipset is slow or something. I just finished kirin zerg on vanilla cor and came out with highest ws frequency in entire ally v.s 5 other DD (WAR SAM DRK COR) used windower and parsing the whole run. I don't think anyone got terrored nor stoned to screw the result.

I also dragged a drk friend in ambu VD who has all the HQ gear/+3 in tp set and dagan, even in clean runs that he wasn't tanking nor die, I still came out with higher ws frequency every single clean run.

Not using windower is somewhat annoying to deal with certain conditional swap like 3k tp ws set or dw tiers. And I'm more likely to forget other conditional swaps too, such as regain set for stun/stone or slept, or cursna received set when doom count reaches 3.

But if I'm just tp and ws as soon as I hit 1000 tp I certainly never notice any difference between myself and another windower guy. On DD job at least. The biggest difference between GS and in game macro is probably 3 set swapping for casting by adding a spell interruption set after FC but before potency set. This can't be done with vanilla.

And yes, windower elitists who will come and hunt down every vanilla player are annoying as hell :<

Nah.

Edit: My tp speed frequency in game is in line with spreadsheet result if you consider AM activation and extra tp gain via qd. It is not the result of people are lazy or bad. It only shows vanilla does not hinder ws speed.
