So I know most fights being able to cast the debuff as a geo-spell from afar keeps you safe from aoe damage. However some fights it is not necessary. The magic damage formula uses magic attack bonus and magic defense bonus in a mab/mdb ratio. https://www.bg-wiki.com/bg/Magic_Damage

This being the case, when your MAB is greater than the targets MDB, reducing the magic defense further is more effective than raising your MAB. However the reverse is the same as well.

Lets take 600 MAB vs 1000 MDB to exagerate these numbers. Acumen and malaise are both 30 and blaze of glory adds 15. After spells are applied we get:

bog acumen 645/970 = .664 | bog malaise 630/955 = .659

Blaze of glorying the acumen pushes the multiplier closer to 1. Lets reverse and see, 1000 mab vs 600 mdb.

bog acumen 1045/570 = 1.83 | bog malaise 1030/555 = 1.85

Blaze of glory on malaise gives a better multiplier.

So on most things like fodder and apex, geo-malaise would be the best as you can push the de-buff further with job abilities, however is this true for all things like tier 3 and 4 escha NMs?

I'm willing to bet that you generally should stick to geo-malaise but I'm curious if there are fights where geo-acumen would be better.

Malaise is always the more powerful of the two and should be the one you BoG.

You say always, what about versus a target with exceptional magic defense? Or in today's game a blm being a blm in itself, besides the gear, will always have more mab than a NM's defense?

I can't remember any monsters with more than +60 MDB (160 total) and I bet there aren't many over +100 (200 total). Thus Malaise is at least a ~20% boost (or ~30% with BoG). It gets even better if you stack it with stuff like Vidohunir.

BLMs have like 400 MAB right now, eh? So Acumen's +30 MAB is always a <10% increase in damage (~10% with BoG).

While it's mathematically possible for Acumen to be better than Malaise, I can't imagine you'd be using magic damage in that situation.

So as content level raises, the real kick in the nuts becomes resist rather than combating the magic defense. Since resist is magic evasion and increase in INT stat combined.

It's interesting how magic defense does not go up when facing high level monsters in the way evasion and physical defense does. Probably why black mages are more effective end game.

I am quite fond of Indi-INT, Geo-Malaise and Entrust Indi-Acumen during Bolster.

Typically it is Indi-Focus, Geo-Malaise and Entrust Indi-Haste during Bolster for Reisenjima T4.

Idris focus = 100 magic accuracy
idris indi-int = 45 int, and assuming your INT is above the target's, that equals 22.5 magic accuracy.

I realize INT effects base damage as well, but how effective is INT on death?

Correct it is not, but you are not using Death on everything.

Vinipata you use Fire on.
Zerde you use Fire on.
Schah's adds you use Thunder on.
Oncyphora you use Aero on.
