On wiki it says "Opponent's attack must bypass character's Evasion, shadows (Blink/Utsusemi), and Parry for this trait to trigger."
What about Shield? Does a Counter happen before or after it checks for a shield block?

Counter Question
On wiki it says "Opponent's attack must bypass character's Evasion, shadows (Blink/Utsusemi), and Parry for this trait to trigger."
What about Shield? Does a Counter happen before or after it checks for a shield block? Would assume after Shield Block check.
Counter procs before guard, so I'd assume it'd also proc before shield, as shield is more closely related to guard (in the sense that you still take damage) than it is to parry (which no damage is taken)
Well, both (Counter and Shield) proc after parry anyway but I get your drift.
Counter before Guard/Shield does make sense. I wouldn't know about any findings regarding this issue though. Lol from a logical perspective, most counters will include a parry, so you can parry w/o countering but must parry to counter, which is why parry would come before counter!

If Shield was checked before counter, then an Ochain PLD/MNK would never counter. And seeing as I've used counterstance to skill up with Ochain equipped before, it's safe to say counter is checked before shield.
Martel has confirmed the theory of myself and the demonstration of Mr. Sensui

FYI, since this thread turns up at the top of some Google searching...
The order of checks is... Evasion, Parry, Shadows, Counter and then Shield. See this thread for further discussion: https://www.ffxiah.com/forum/topic/52164/april-2018-version-update/4/ |
