Cerberus.Kalyna said: » The thing is, as I said in the SOPA/PIPA thread last week. Just by using a calculator, the total signatures from Google is only .01% of the total USA population. Now let's assume that the signatures are all from registered voters, That's still .04% of the population. (Numbers are 4.5mil signatures from Google, and you can google the approx pop # as well as how many people voted. I used 2008 election because presidential elections tend to give higher voter turnout.) I don't know about you but that's not enough to sway things for the better. Many people I've talked to at school had no idea about SOPA or PIPA nor did they know Google/Wiki/Reddit were down last wednesday. Especially seeing the official World Internet Usage of 90.1% in USA. http://www.internetworldstats.com/stats.htm I keep reading about an Internet War. It's not going to happen, just going by general stats. To be honest, the only problem I have with the prospect of a civil war to oust corrupt politicians and replace them with decent people is fear.
The government has the American military on their side, which is arguably the strongest military in the world. I'm not sure how a group of citizens, no matter how large, could ever win something against the military. If the people had the backing of even one branch of the military, there might be a chance. But without that, resistance against the government would end in the bloody deaths and imprisonments of citizens. The people shouldn't have to fear death and imprisonment at the hands of their own government. The people shouldn't have to fear the military in an attempt to bring down corruption. It's time we go back to old fashioned boycotting and voter activity. They'll never fix what needs to be fixed so long as supper comes from the big boys of business and their lobbyist ilk.
Throw the bums out sounds nice on paper but it's like changing puppets at a puppet show. The hands controlling the puppets are the same. Such action (military action ending in bloodshed) would spell the end of this country and send shockwaves across the globe. Somehow I doubt the military would fire on it's own citizens and there would be a point where some portion of enlisted individuals would balk at the notion of making war against their own. Hypothetical 'end of America' scenarios aside, the people can stand up against their elected officials but it's going to take something that can unite the entire general populace like income inequality or general incompetence from Congress. Most people right now D/R or I can agree that the country is on the wrong path and even the Republican primary shows that the party is having a tough time selling a viable candidate to run the country but we as Americans always get mired down in the smaller issues and that's where we're divided and devoured. People need to think beyond the two parties and stop drinking the kool-aid they feed you. It's fine to have Democratic views or Republican views but make those views your OWN views and try to be informed on it without running to the talking points. Parroting MSNBC or FOX doesn't score you points and further contributes to the political divide that has us completely and utterly paralyzed. As an Independant (that leads more left than right generally), I like being able to say I support a Republican at times as much as I enjoy supporting a Democrat. That's what this country is supposed to be about - compromise but somewhere along the way we've forgotten about it. From what I've noticed, the only people happy with the gov't are ones that are needlessly living off of its handouts. Daemun said: But they put sugar in it and it tastes so sweet. From what I've noticed, the only people happy with the gov't are ones that are needlessly living off of its handouts. You're assuming that people enjoy living off govt handouts which I'm sure many are not. The job market is brutal if you're not educated up to snuff, the retailers are enjoying the cyclical layoffs and we've got a scenario where alot of idle hands are simply doing nothing. I know people who have all but given up work because their skillset just vaporized thanks to offshore manufacturing. This would be a great time to put those hands to work improving our infrastructure that's falling apart but alas the government doesn't see it that way along with labor unions guarding their own. The welfare queen is a rare breed and doesn't represent the whole. I think most people with their head out of the sand can agree that the government is hopelessly corrupted by business/union interests and the cycle of planning for re-election campaigns is taking away from the job that Congress is sent to do in Washington. Some campaign reform would go along way to changing how the status quo works up at Washington and really what annoys me more than anything are career politicians living up there for 20+ years. Let me clarify. By no means am I saying everyone on gov't assistance is like this; merely that this type of "citizen" is growing. This is an unprecedented issue, we are the military. The military is comprised of our relatives and friends. At the end of the day (regardless of what bills pass) I would like to think they wouldn't point a gun at us.
I'm an Independent voter too. Both the democrats and the republicans have good things and bad things going for them. Actually I took a political spectrum test awhile back because I was curious about where I stood, exactly, and I turned out to be a center-left moderate social libertarian. Whatever that means! But so many people are stuck into thinking they can only be democrats or republicans and reject anything the other side proposes because it must be bad because it's not the party they are in. It seems like there's so much bickering between the two parties that nothing important is ever going to get resolved. Even if one party has an excellent plan to fix something, the other party will reject it. They will make up an excuse to reject it. Quite annoying. :-(

Let me clarify. By no means am I saying everyone on gov't assistance is like this; merely that this type of "citizen" is growing. Have you questioned why they are growing? Because the jobs aren't there and the jobs that are there pay so little you're pretty much working to collect the same amount that welfare provides or less. Minority unemployment is double to triple the current mainstream numbers being tossed around in the media. Everyone uses buzzwords like job creation but where are the jobs? How much do they pay? What's employee retention look like? Benefits? Never hear any politicians mentioning that because most of the jobs toted can barely sustain a family in today's world of penalty here, penalty there and no benefits anywhere. Of course this depends on where you live in the country - there are boom towns popping up right now where people are doing extremely well and it's important to mention that. The largest businesses in our country are recording record profits yet where are the jobs we citizens ask in return? We know for a fact that many businesses do have openings but they are for high-end positions with specialized skillsets few possess. Further, the employers want years of experience that eliminate those with the skillset can meet because they can't get a job to even gain some experience. The lower tier jobs are comprised of hire, frustrate and fire in order to dodge doling out benefits or working on a contractual basis in such a way that you're never really an employee. With so many big fish gaming the system are we surprised when it happens on the other end? The welfare queen is a rare breed and doesn't represent the whole. Sad, isn't it? I feel bad for most people. My only fear is that since there's such cynicism over the job-market that people are becoming complacent with being out of work so long. I do know two "welfare queens" though. Not too keen on them. The government has done a lackluster (at best) job for helping to stimulate the economy. Of course the jobs aren't there, but when they were these people weren't looking for them. Our policies now reward you for being lazy and punish you for being a hard worker. You finish school, get a 10/hr job working at McDonald's and have to get up every day, listen to people complain and go home smelling like grease. These other people wake up when they want, make extra tax free money selling prescription drugs and live like kings. Where is the incentive to work? Where is the humility of people unable to support their families without assistance?
We don't have jobs. That's consumerisms fault. Instead of caring about quality in our products, we shop solely for price point. This has led to outsourcing. Housing market bust? Unfortunate, but banks knew about the potential for it years ago, but kept handing out those idiotic ARM loans. What does the gov't do to "fix" this? They bail the banks out instead of bailing the uninformed citizens out. Our economy starts to recover....what do we do? Raise taxes on oil (and all fossil fuel energies). Pow, good luck economic recovery. Things have started to flatten out, and low and behold what have we seen this month? Rising fuel prices, again. It's not that there is no market. Our stupid leaders keep killing any viable market the tough American people try to put back in place. Gov't leaders want it this way. They want us dependant. They want us grovelling at their feet for food. The best way to keep a dog from biting is never letting it know it had teeth. You know who I feel really horrible for??? Newly graduated under-grads. Things went bust when I graduated in 2008. I can't imagine what it's like for them now. I'm convinced that the only reason I found my job so easily and have maintained my job is because I went to school with the president's son. Who you know...That's all it's about right now. Merit has been totally sacked.
